Tell why you rotate EDC's

What causes my fellow Knife Knuts to change the knives they carry?

I rotate through my EDC's pretty frequently. I suppose that means they're not truly EDC's if I don't carry one specific knife every day, but that's a definition I'm not looking to answer today.

I find that I might be in the office regularly for a few days, so I'll carry my William Henry T12 with Black Palm/ Mokume. I might travel by car for a while to some jobsites and switch out to something like a Benchmade 690 to take with me. I might have just honed my Dave Seaton custom to a razor edge, and feel like carrying that for a while...

It seems I'm changing my carry knives (notice I didn't use the term EDC!) based on my location, use, my attire (I admit it! I have some knives that are almost accessories), or just a whim.

C'mon, open up! let's hear the reasons you all change your carry knives!

I carry both a FB and a folder. I only own 1 folder (Lg Classic Mayonized Sebbie), so that is a true EDC. The FB's are all Busse's that I rotate whenever the mood hits. Perhaps once a week, sometimes longer, seldom less. Not dress dependant, usually when the belt is off and I'm in the safe or 1 needs sharpening. I sharpen at work usually.

It all depends on the circumstances. I have a Military, but the large blade and the G10 handles don't exactly go with slacks in an office environment. That's when the William Henry comes out. However, when my time is my own (i.e., the weekend), I'll carry the Military.

I do keep a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker around at all times. It's eminently useful, and doesn't even bother most sheeple.

I EDC a Spyderco Native III in a belt sheath, a Delica clipped to my right front pocket, a Ladybug in my back pocket, a Leatherman Squirt in my right front pants pocket, a Leatherman Juice in a belt sheath, a CRKT F4 clipped to my truck visor, a CRKT Crawford fixed falcon in my center console, a CRKT Kasper Polkowski Companion in my map case attached to the back of my front passenger seat, a Tomahawk machete in my cargo area... and that about sums it up. Obviously, I don't carry all of these everywhere I go. I can't take these into work, although I've seen guys with blades visibly on their person. Outside of work, I use my Ladybug very frequently, as well as my Squirt. Everything else gets used a lot, especially my Juice. I have EDC'ed a SOG Blink and Twitch II, but moved the Blink to my BOB, and the Twitch II had a nasty fall :(. As for the other knives, I've decided that my Native III is one of the best knives out there, I could get by on just it alone. The Juice is not as bulky as my Wave or my SOG Powerlock. The fixed blades aren't that valuable, can take a lot of abuse. I did have a Kabar shorty tanto in there for a while, but I would like to take better care of that. As soon as I get the Twitch II fixed, I will bring that back into the rotation.

Exactly. I'd say for my self most of the time why I rotate my EDC knife is out of boredom. Since I was a kid I have a tendency of putting my favourite toy aside once I've had fun with it for a long while, suddenly remember some other old toys in the drawer, and I'd took them out and playing with them as if they are new. It goes like a cycle. :)

For something different. ;)

Lately though I've been sticking with my G&G Hawk E.T., Brashaw Midlock, and Benchmite.

I don't rotate, I carry the same knife til that knife breaks, gets lost or deems itself unworthy in some way. I've been pretty happy with my EDC (Microtech SOCOM MA) for the last few years.

If you cannot already guess by my forum name, I carry a Swiss Army Knife.

I carry a Victorinox Super Tinker. I carry it all the time. Sometimes I carry a blue Victorinox Climber, but that's usually it.

When I'm out and about sometimes I'll throw my Benchmade 550OD grip in my pocket but not usually more than that.

So, I don't rotate really. Mostly carry the same SAK.

Good thread :)

For me, it's fun researching which knives get used the most, etc. I also work in an office environment, but in a test/research area full of PC's (I test software). I don't need to wear dress pants or anything that resembles formal, just neat. So....for me, it's a golf shirt and usually cargo pants or jeans. Because of air conditioning to keep the machines cool, I also usually wear a light polar fleece jacket, zippered up the front. This allows me to carry a lot of stuff!!! What I normally do, is when I purchase a new folder, I will use it all the time for a few days, or however long it takes to get a feel for how well it works in my normal day(s), occasionally changing the odd one out from before. Usually, the one that doesn't get used gets rotated out. I've been doing this for a couple of years now and despite all the folders I own, I really don't rotate as much as I thought. I'm "packin" a bunch today, though - on the weekend, I purchased my Spyderco Para-Military and BM Mini Grip, and I picked up my Griptillian this morning at the post office on the way into the office :D Up to this point, I found that I used my BM Mini-Ambush, Spydie Delica, and Ka-Bar/Dozier quite constantly. My SAK just plain never gets rotated out - just seems to be handy when I need it :D My Camillus Heat only gets used when I need to knock down server boxes, but it's been there since I bought it and it does see some use. My Endura is also getting a bit of use. I'm really liking the Para Military and it may get rotated out with my Heat, but we'll see..... I'm REALLY pleased with both Griptillians, so I'll probably carry those all the time as well, for at least the next little while. One that was a sleeper for me was the Schrade Badger, it got used a surprisingly amount up until I bought the Delica.

Weekends..it depends on what I'm doing, where I'm going and what I'm wearing. My Ka-Bar/Dozier, Delica and SAK-always. The larger stuff can be anything from the Heat to Gerber Gator to Buck 110 in addition to a fixed blade of some sort. Leatherman PST, of course.

Another big thing for me is that I am losing a fair amount of weight, and still have my big clothes. I've punched holes in my belts to accomodate for a tighter fit, but still can't have a sheath knife on my belt, because I'm afraid my pants will fall down!

See, I spend most of my money on knives, instead of clothes. Is that a sickness?

I think it might be. I have been doing the same thing recently. In fact, I am going to have to quit buying knives for a little while so I can get some new clothes and shoes. :D

By the way, nice job on the weight loss. What are you using to punch holes in your belts? I bet a nice SAK will do the job well.

My initial response is because I can. But in truth it is actually because I have so many nice ones that I have trouble making up my mind. So I give them all a pocket ride from time to time. Sometimes two and three at a time. LOL

It's true, variety IS the spice of life! I change around between three large folders and between two small folders. I generally change as the mood hits me.
Today I'm carrying my RJ Martin Devastator in my right front pocket and a SAK in my left front pocket. The other large knives would include a Kit Carson E&E and Rick Hinderer Firetac Extreme. The other smaller knife is aanother SAK.

Part of it is mood , part of is cause I can ! On a more serious level , it has to do with planned activity and order of dress etc .

I try to carry the biggest knife I can, with a Spyderco Delica or Dragonfly as a back up. My biggest folder is the Cuda Maxx 7.0. Sometimes it isn't practical to carry it, so I will rotate with a Benchmade Skirmish, Spyderco Endura or Emerson CQC-7. It depends mostly on what I am wearing. When I go to the beach or swimming, I use my Spyderco Atlantic Salt.

I don't switch my EDC, I have been carrying a BM 943 for almost a year now and have no intentions of changing it.

Because it's fun to pull out a different knife everytime someone sees you! :D

I've got a friend who when she sees me now always asks, "What are you carrying today?" For some reason that just makes my day...

Mostly, I'll switch out just because I can. But there are days when I make a point to carry one over another. For instance: On Wednesday our order comes in at work. I make sure I have my SOG Twitch I for opening boxes. It is short enough that it won't puncture whatever lies beneath the tape. But then I also make sure to carry my Spyderfly. I have to carry collapsed boxes outside to the recycling bin. As you may or may not know, it is somewhat difficult to carry 5 or 6 large collapsed boxes without constantly stopping to grab them or dropping them. SO, I stab my balisong through them and have a nice little handle to pick them up with.
I'm so ephing brilliant...
