Temp gauge for blueing salts?

Hi folks!

Long time no questions! I've been busy making knives and I even attended my first MKA show. I took a refresher forging class from Ed Caffrey on the way back to Monument,CO and have been spending a fair amount of time at the forge now.

Anyhow, I'm working on an "S" guard bowie and would like to hot blue the guard and butt cap. I ordered some nitre blue blueing salts from Brownells and, while I wait for them to arrive, I was trying to get set up to use them. My question is what kind of temperature gauge do folks use? All the house hold thermometers only go to about 400-500 degress and the blueing salts need a temperature range of 570-620. I'm looking for a cheap, ready-to-use, setup, as I'm as dumb as the proverbial stick when it comes to electrical stuff (among other things!).

Thanks guys!

Hi Dana, I use an Omega and stainless thermocouple but Brownells sell a simple thermometer in that heat range. Here is the part number: 084 069 225 price is $39.97 Their phone #800-741-0015

Brownelles sells one for use with the Nitreblue slats. Call 'em quick and you could have it in a few days. Has kind of a long stem on it and a holding clamp to keep it on the edge of your pot. There's nothin "electrical" about it!

You can also check out ebay. Plenty of simple long stem thermometers under $20 - $30 with many different temp. ranges.

I was using the Brownell's one before converting everything over to temp controllers.
In short, the Brownell's thermometer is inexpensive and durable, plus it has a handy little clip to stick it to the side of the tank.

Thanks, a lot, Bruce, Karl, Diggerdog and Mr. Caswell!
I'll give Brownells a jingle today.

I bought the 10# can of nitre blue salts and the most expensive (nearly)
item was the shipping (hazardous stuff)

Best regards,
Dana
