I am planning on trying some stainless steel and heat treat it myself.

I have never used the stainless steel foil before. I need help on two things

1) where can I get temp rated foil for above 2100 so I can try ELMAX?
2) How do you use the foil correctly? ( what is the right way to wrap the blade? )

Hi Brian,
I have both 1800 deg and 2200 deg foil wrap in my shop. This company is one of many suppliers and I do not no if they are the cheapest. http://www.keithcompany.com/heat-treat-foils-and-tool-wraps.html

How I wrap a part is, 3 complete wraps around the part leaving the overall length longer by 3". Crimp the ends over like a tube of toothpaste 2 or 3 times.
Things to watch for are, Do not get the crimped ends to close to the ends of the knife. Cutting The ends off with tin snips will be much easier. USE Gloves. When working the foil it is like playing with a box of razors.
I like making the package long enough so when I plate Quench the crimped ends do not get caught between the plates.

Sincerely,
Dave

I would not recommend starting out with Elmax if you're new to HT. It's fairly tricky/picky, and pretty expensive. Do you have a LN tank? You're going to need one if you expect to get the most out of really complex steels like that... otherwise it's kind of a waste. You might consider starting out with a dry ice cold treatment and more basic/less expensive steels like 440C/154CM.
