2 quick questions. 1) is there a website with a chart for tempering different types of steel so i can find out temps and times for tempering steel? 2) I'm looking for small inlays to put in handles when making knives. Looking for navy inlay (CB's would be perfect) for a knife I want to make my dad. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Can you be more specific? Are you heat treating your self or are you having it sent out? How do you plan on doing the heat treating? Tempering is only one step of the process. The final step unless you are doing cryo tempering or sub zero tempering. Also when you say Navy and CB's do you mean Seabees? I happen to be a former Navy Seabee. Just need better clarification to give you some better advice.

I will be doing heat treating and tempering myself. Kinda why i asked. CB's-seabees, same thing. I know its spelled seabees, but on a zippo lighter my dad has it is CB's

When working with a new steel I just Google or Bing search for it. Using 440C and moving up to CPM-154 for instance? Bing "CPM-154 heat treat" and you'll get bunches of hits. Read some of the more credible ones and you'll quickly see what you're looking for.

Had to do the same thing for 1084 myself last month, as it was my first time working with it. Google or Bing searches usually show many Blade Forum threads, which are useful.

Another source for ht info is AKS, just register as a customer and it will give you access to ht and temper info for their steel.

There are a number of Construction Battalions. Not everyone here knows what CB's means as far as construction battalions there are a number of active ones. You'r profile says you are 52. I suspect there have been many Battalions commissioned and deactivated since your father was active duty. Kinda why I asked. Listed below are just the current active ones. There were over 140 commissioned Battalions during WWII.

So if you want help locating something for an inlay a little more info would help. I'd almost suggest having something laser etched. If it's a really old Battalion you may not be able to find something to use as an inlay if its a decommissioned battalion.

If you want to emulate what is on the zippo post a picture of it. There is no way to know what insignia is on it without seeing it. Every Battalion has it's own.

I'm not looking for a specific battalion, just CBs in general, or even navy. It was just a general question. And dad wasn't even born when ww2 started. The only navy inlay i have found is 1 1/2", a lil to big for handle inlay
