Temperature question

I am not sure what you are asking? Running a still at 900 F and above would be useful for separating heavy fuel oil from tar. A properly protected thermocouple attached to a PID should help you determine the temperature of your superheated steam. There are probably some high temperature thermometers out there that would give you a direct reading, but I'm not sure.

Other than a HT oven is there a gadget to let you know what the temp of your still is above 900?

Still or steel? HT ovens don't measure temperature... they provide it... Stills are vessels used to separate the components of a solution via evaporation and condensation. To make shine, you only need to get to about 190f, not 900f and a simple propane eye will do. Don't ask me how I know.

To measure the temperature of pretty much anything in the -330 to 2460f range a good shielded type-k thermocouple and multi-meter that will read it will be as accurate as you'd ever want probably. There are IR thermometers that read very high available as well.

Cheers.

sorry guys typo it is steel not still. I am looking for ways to be more exact with my heat treat, just can't afford a heat treat oven as of yet.
