I have forged, normalized and hardened a hawk from a block of 1060 steel. Since it is intended for throwing what temperature will be good for tempering?

Around 400°-410° should leave you at about 55-56 if Im not mistaken since 1055 tempered at appx 385° will leave it around 58..

Hi, thanks Kentucky. I normalized, then heated the hawk to 1500 and quenched in parks 50. I am thinking only the first couple of inches of the edge got fully hardened. It is in the oven now. Thanks again for the reply. I have previously been helped by your posts and admire your work.

1060 has an as-quenched of about Rc 62. The temper is fairly flat up to 400F where it sits at Rc 60. It drops to Rc 59 at 450, and Rc 55/54 at 600F I would do a temper at 550F for a thrower and shoot for about Rc 55/56.

Thank you. It is surprising how even a supposedly "simple steel" is not that simple. I tempered it at 400 for an hour and a half. I' ll follow it with another session at the higher temp. It's going to be a present for a preteen it will have to be tough. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
