Tempering Sewing Awl Needles

Thought I'd pass this on...

Bought a couple of awls, since they were half price, I picked up two.

I didn't manage to get one complete stitch before breaking both needles from the one awl set. Probably as much to do with my inexperience as the temper of the needles, which seems to be non-existent (the temper).

I thought, what do you do to a knife blade to keep it from breaking... TEMPER it.

got out the torch, put the tip in a vise grip up to the eye and brought everything but the tip up to just beyond deep bronze - purple. hasn't broke yet.
 
Sounds like they forgot to temper them ! It happens. I had a set of Chinese miniature screw drivers that were very soft. II used case hardening compound to solve that.
 
I'm not sure, but I read quite a few people talking about breaking needles so it made sense to me to temper them. Seems to have worked.
