I was wondering 3 things:

1) Are there any general templates anyone has scanned for fixed blades? Somethig I can use for my first knife.

2) What grit belts do you use? As in what grit for the shaping, and each step.

3) I have a lg hacksaw blade and some old files to start working on, how do I soften the metal so I can work it? How do I harden it back when I finish?

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help... those 3 questions should help with 80% of what I need to know.

Welcome to blade forums. Let me say first, myself being a newbie in many ways, that you can find all kinds of answers to your questions just by going back thru the last 4 to 5 pages of threads. Everyone on here has been a great help to me, and have always had someone who could answer my questions. Go to these guys websites and see what they've done, and many have tuturials to help you out with many things.

Here is a site that someone here gave me when I first started posting, more info than can be absorbed!!!!!! at once anyway. Here's my answers to your questions anyway, hope they help a little.

1) Its your knife, so anything that you can draw on paper, you can create! Keep it simple though. If nothing else, get your favorite knife out and trace it. That's what I did for my first one.

2) Belts!!! lol! get something heavy for profiling, I use 36 grit, and then go to 50 or 80 for final profiling. I personally start with a 3M gold 50grt to start my hollow grind then move to J-flex 150,220,320,400grts. I have been buying differnt belts to try, and you definately get what you pay for. I've found that alot of people like different brands and compounds, so you just got to find works best for you.

3)Not real sure, I start with either 440c or ats34.

Hope it helps.... Make sure to check out that site I gave ya!

on the belts I just started going 60,320, and 800.
when I was using alot more steps like 60, 120, 240, and so on I would think I
got all the scratches off and go to hand sand the blade and find a deep
60 grit scratch.
