Tempor Delay

So just a few minutes ago. I finished grinding a small blade, and brought it to heat treat. Well, my father in law just recently had a pacemaker put in so they want to take us all out to celebrate a successful procedure.
My question is. I literally just finished Heat treating this blade and now we have to meet them for dinner. Would the blade be junk if its not tempered right away? I dont want to leave the oven on while were out.

Btw its 1084

Stainless is another ball game. It can not be successfully heat treated by common home methods.

1084 is the eutectoid steel. It doesn't have big problems in HT. Hyper-eutectoid steels like 1095, W2, etc. can crack if left too long after hardening and before temper. I usually say to temper all steel within an hour or two, and hyper-eutectoid steel immediately.

Stainless steel has lots of retained austenite at room temperature after quench, and needs a sub-zero treatment and the temper cycles to fully convert to martensite.

In practical terms, immediately is "as soon as possible". The longer the delay, the more issues you may have to deal with, but in most cases within 12 hours will rarely cause noticeable problems.

Note:
If getting the blade into temper isn't the problem, but taking it out after an hour or two is, don't worry. The blade can temper for four-six hours with no problem. If you worry about it, lower that temper about 5°.

Stacy, I think he just doesn't want to leave a hot oven unattended while he's away from the house.
