Ten One Tens

A.P.F. -

thanks for the link, very informative. I'm planning on these being working knives for years to come, but with a little 'special embellishment' - two of these will be gifts to family, and we're all partial to Bucks. I'm ok with Buck's 420HC, but I figure if there's another steel that'll give us a little more endurance, I pay more for it.

Guyon...
Thanks so much for taking the time to post the close ups of the stag and jigged buff HeeBeeGeeBees. I have three diff asian buffs and not a one is as beautiful as your's.
I like mine...but your's is "display quality" in my opinion.

Mine have plenty of white streaking that I tell myself are "character".
After seeing your's, I'm telling myself I need to continue to find one with less "character".
Thanks for piquing my interest. :)

The two on the lower right are great.

Guyon - in your opinion, which steel would serve better as a working piece (sharpening, edge endurance)? I'm planning to order three, maybe from Cabela's, maybe from the custom shop.

thx - cpr

I think BG-42 is tough to beat. It really takes and holds and edge nicely. The down side is you have to place an order with the Custom Shop and wait if you want that steel.

You can have a Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110 with S30V within the week, on the other hand. The S30V takes a mean edge, but I haven't put that one to any hard use.

There are folks here who can better speak to the comparison, I'll bet.

Thanks Guyon & A.F.P. for the info; I'll roam around here for a little while & see what pops up in the posts.

thx - cpr

Also worthy of consideration is the 154CM Buck 110 at Bass Pro.

Maybe not as hip or cool as S30V, but still a really good steel.

Tempting, tempting . . .
I like the 110 so much I may buy one (from Bass Pro) just to have.

Been thinking about picking up one myself. However, I do have an ATS-34 blade already, and they are basically the same steel.

154CM - Crucible - American
ATS-34 - Hitachi - Japanese

From the above link:

154-CM ATS-34 was the hottest high-end stainless in the 1990s. 154-CM is the original American version, but for a long time was not manufactured to the high quality standards knifemakers expect, so knifemakers switched over to ATS-34. CPM is again making high-quality 154-CM, and some companies seeking to stick with American-made products (like Microtech) are using it. ATS-34 is a Hitachi product that is very, very similar to 154-CM. Normally hardened to around 60 Rc, it holds an edge very well and is tough enough even at that high hardness. Not as rust resistant as the 400 series above. Many custom makers use ATS-34, and Spyderco (in their high-end knives) and Benchmade are among the production companies that use it. Contrary to popular belief, both steels are manufactured through the Argon/Oxygen/Decarburization process (AOD), not vacuum remelted.

Yup - I'm learning a ton of info from the link that A.F.P. posted; it's amazing to me how much some things (steels) are so similar, and how something made ten years ago may not have been such a good product then, but now is great.

I'll post pics once I get these ordered & delivered.
