Here is a quick handout I made to address the 10 essentials I recommend for the Wilderness Learning Center Advanced Course. Hope it helps with your gear selection.

Like all my other handouts, print it out and share the info. Carrying this with you is a lot easier than lugging a computer around with you!

Have a good weekend, I'm off to Maine to meet up with some of the forumites in the morning.

Good one, Kev.

I've been reading "Ten Essentials" lists — all of them somewhat different, all of them basically the same — for a long time. This one really is different: I like it.

Interesting! Always nice to see what someone else considers the "essentials" as my own 10 Essentials daypack is in a fairly constant state of change and improvement. In fact, I made some fairly significant changes to my pack this summer, base in large part on ideas and feedback I got from the W&SS forum here.

Thanks for sharing!

Do you mind if this is shared with others? It could be a useful taining tool for boyscouts and others new to the outdoors.

I do what I do to educate others. Share it with whoever you want. If it helps even one person, I succeeded.

If you can, simply give credit where its due. If not, I prob won't lose sleep over it.

good post my friend.
really like you pushing the rule of 3 to the carrying of knives. Lost or broken does happen.
folder, small fixed and large fixed or axe is a must in canadian woods more than a few hours from the truck.
a small folding or slide saw is the only other thing I feel is a must but here in the rainforest it is needed. I have a little 4in folding coghlan sierra saw that kicks butt on any sak saw I have used. Sk-5 on the blade to boot for like 8 to 11 bucks.

Thanks Kev! Well presented I will share this with members of my Emergency response Team. We do a lot of training in the big woods and I am always preaching about having their own survival gear with them at all times.

Mike

Good presentation Kevin!

I really like the school knife! Wish it was commonly available.
