Tenacious acid etch project - First attempt at acid etching! EPIC fail

Yes etching solution makes quick work of most metals and seeing as you left it overnight I am surprised it looked as good as it did.
Great post because you are not the first nor the last who may want to go this route.

It wouldn't hurt to try to salvage it, who knows?
Kind of doubt it would be able to go back for a warranty though.

It attacks it by attaching the iron end to the steel and then releasing the Chlorine ion producing an electric charge which eats directly into the Steel. It will pit anywhere it can get an advantage in attaching

Thank you for the explanation MC Chan. I thought there had to be a current.

Obviously the time was too long but what about protecting the parts you want protected with an anode type system? High tech coating/epoxies for sport watercraft? You could selectively remove in areas and not in others....well, better than the nail polish anyway.

Kind of doubt it would be able to go back for a warranty though.

I wouldn't be surprised if some have tried knives buggered up nice and fancy. Give them the old " I left it on my bedside table overnight and it crumbled when the house cooled off". Some one would inevitably support him and chime in with the "It's a bad heat treat" proclamation with anyone disagreeing proclaimed "fanboi" and "drink the cool aid". Then the magnanimous position taken that it was their duty to bring it up to Spyderco to help them improve their product line by bringing it to their attention. Besides, they had a cheaper knife from a chinese maker that held up even after spending two years in the gizzard of a dire wolf after their arm holding the knife was bitten off in battle. It took 3 years and a plus 3 spear of divine retribution to get that knife and arm back, and it just needed a quick few swipes on their ceramic rod to tree top hair again.

Too cynical?

I apologize if anyone is dim enough to take this to heart and be offended by my obviously strange, sleep deprived sense of humor. Grrr!

So says the mastiff!

That looks spectacular Maprik.

I just bought a slightly used Endura Sprint with the Superblue and 420 that has some fine scratches from where the previous owner cut some cardboard. I wonder how the etching would work on the different metals.
