Tent heat?

I also use the Mr. Heater with the low O2 sensor and tip over shutoff. I had a friend who would check his before every campout by putting it in an enclosed space and checking the low O2 sensor that way. Also for info i use it in a kodiak canvas tent which does breathe unlike the non canvas tents out there.

Your red blood cells prefer Carbon Monoxide 30x more than Oxygen. You can't smell it or see it it is a silent killer. I would add: wear clean dry socks, have a pee bottle in the tent so you don't have to go outside:) A woman in the sack will also contribute to overall body heat.

Hey gerryg,

Not to be disagreeable, but anything can malfunction, and I'm not willing to bet my life on it.

Doc
No worries DOC, and I fully respect your position. Even though I use a carbon monoxide detector which gives me a continuous digital readout, it took me a long time until I found a heater i could trust, and even then only while awake.

I will never run one when sleeping but I'm very much in the same camp as August West for evening relaxing. My dog and I will watch a couple of episodes of the Sopranos on the laptop and split a can of pringles sour cream and onion chips before shutting the heater down and settling in for the night. My only non-heater related tip for this post would be to make sure you can tell your pee bottle from your water bottle in the dark. ;) gerry

Hey gerryg, does your CO detector have an audible alarm? I hear you about only using it while awake - very wise.

I just noticed you're from Milton and a new member - welcome to Blade Forums. Good to see another Southern Ontarioan in here.

Grab a light sleeping bag and use yours and a light one one inside the other. Also, those little hand warmer bags are great.

I have been frozen camping for many years;
Tried the hand warmer in the foot of the sleeping bag... got hot foot.
Tried the little 5,000 BTU parabolic heaters with the throw away propane can; worked OK for getting into and out of the sleeping bag but like all disposable can propane heaters they really don't last that long (maybe 6 to 8 hours).
Got a 10 pound refillable propane tank and a double burner infrared heater, worked OK on low but the reflector was unstable and needed to really be attached to the tank inside the tent...Didn't care for the idea of a tank full of propane inside with both me and an operating heater.
Tried the 100,000 +BTU construction/garage heater (ran a hose to a 20 pound tank) didn't last long ... OK for a sauna.
Tried the 20,000 BTU Coleman stove works but it has an open flame (works fine, with my 10 lb tank, for unforeseen cold snap).
Tried an 18,000 BTU unvented bluflame heater with thermostat (like a mini fire place) worked good for my 12x12 alknak tent but the condensation inside was like being in a drizzle, and the heat shuts off when the warm reaches form the ceiling down to about 24" off the floor (cold feet).
Recently purchased a MR Heater Big Buddy Heater; works good at home and is adjustable (3 steps) between 4,000 and 18,000 BTU. I will use this with a regulator & hose and my refillable 10 pound propane tank and expect to be pretty well set this next spring...

As always use plenty of ventilation avoid open flame and try not to sleep (permanently) with the heater left on...

Enjoy!
