Tent vs. Hammock System

I have a clark Jungle Hammocks North American and the first night I slept in it it was -9 Celsius.I have a Mummy sleeping bag rated for -5.I also packed the 6 under pockets with spare clothes and slept dressed quite comfortably.Any way you slice it -9 is still freaking -9 it was cold as hell when I got up in the morning and used my S1 to pry my boots off of the ground. The huge fire we lit the night before was still burning a little so we stoked it like mad men and thawed our boots and got a warm meal into us.I passed a more comfortable night that my companions who had a bivy and a small tent set up on a pile of boughs.

Great pictures Savagesicslayer! That trip sounds like a lot of fun. I have never slept in a hammock but I can see how it will be colder than tents on the ground. You seem to have been warmer than your partners, which is pretty weird... Maybe you should have swapped shelters for the next nights to see which one was better.

Anyway, don't you think it had been way warmer and ligther to bring a single doble wall three person tent? That way you all will share body heat and you could store your boots inside so they don't freeze off. Maybe you just went outdoors to try out some new gear, then it makes sense to sleep on your own.

Savagesicslayer,

That's a very nice setup .... thanks for the pics.
Good to know you were able to withstand those temps as I know it won't get that cold during my planned trip. Hopefully one day I can experience some time in arctic.

-9 celcius ...... BRRRRRRRRRRR !!!!

Here is a site that does a good job of going over what one would need to sleep in a hammock in different temperatures. I think it's a great resource, with lots of pics.

If you get a hammock that doesn't have a tarp over top (either built in or otherwise), I suggest this video. The guy does a really great job giving the info in an easy to understand way. I'll try to embed it, but don't hold your breath :D

If you're reading this, that means the embedding thing didn't work out, so here is the direct link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjMmla9DSzo
