TEOTWAWKI Series??

In one of my boxes there is a lot of books , the whole Ashes series ( glad I'm not the only one that thought johnstone went really wierd in the latter stages of the series ) and a Guardian book or two , there were a few other paperbacks , The Survivalist by Jerry Ahern was decent.
Invasion USA was good also by W.J. My favorite book by him was Breakdown , I thought that was a great story , as was Ordeal.

Yep, "The Guardians" ! ! Quick spoiler, they were a four man team, one from each branch of the armed forces. One, the leader was Marine Force recon, others were Army Special Forces, Air Force ace, & Navy Commander.
Billed as being selected to safeguard the President in case of nuclear attack, it was revealed that they're true mission was to locate segments of the "Blueprint of Recovery" . . . technology & personal which could help America recover & rebuild after nuclear war.
Segments of the Blueprint were delibertly scattered across the country so that it couldn't all be destroyed. Very dated in that it's all 1980's Cold War setting, but still GREAT fiction & fun to read.
Can't learn much survival info, as all their needs were met by cashes & underground bases prepared by Uncle Sam, but still fun to read.

Just by looking at the covers and blurbs of his books they look like they got completley out of control :barf:

The "Ashes" series started great, in fact the first book "Out Of The Ashes" is one of the better books in the genre. After about 5, they basically turned into the same book over and over, just in a different city, cleaning out the "night people"...

Johnstone did the same with is "horror" novels, every one had the same basic plot....small town Pastor who just happens to be former SF/CIA/Mercenary, battling the minions of Satan in his town.

The one with the town being overran by demonic house cats was kinda funny though. :D

I think we see this quite often in movie sequals as well, trying to repeat the same story line, or redux the charactors ad nausium to click out more dollars. All that really varies is how far they go before a series falls flat on it's face.

Wow! I thought I was the only person that ever read The Guardians! I have all of them and hated to see the series end...I wanna say there are about 16 books to the series...and yes, it gets a little silly at the end, but overall its a great read! I'm gonna have to go back and read them all over again...been about 20 years since they came out!

Biggest complaint I had about "The Guardians" was the lack of consistantcy in their weapons. The team leader carried a modified M-60 primary and a custom Colt Goverment Model handgun. The Green Beret used a M-16/M-203 grenade launcher and two knives. The pilot doubled as team sniper so he used a M-40 bolt action, a MAC-10, & a S&W Model 29, while the Navy Commander carries an Israili Galil & a Colt Python.
Always thought that caused for poor logistics. ABSOLUTELY no commonality of spare parts, magazines, or even calibers.

Ahhhhh, Jerry Ahern . . . . the original "gearhead".
Every other sentence includes referenes to Meta-Life Custom Hi-Powers & S&W's, A.G. Russell Sting knfe, Zippo lighters, and, oh yeah, let's not forget the hundreds of references to Detonics .45's !
Not TOO bad writing, since I read a bit of it, but MAN, did I get sick of him hawking name brands.

This The Guardians series seems interesting...here's a list I found of some of the titles/years (please forgive the copy/paste disjointedness)

So did this series end abruptly, or was there an "end" to the whole story?

Good question, it's been so long I can't remember. Not totally sure I read them all, I didn't remember it running that many books. I thought it was 4-6 or so.
