im looking into a new camera. thx jaxx for the info and advice.

ive got a loaner of the same camera im looking at. panasonic lumix.

was looking at the leica, but this one is more in line with my budget.

are these pics better than my usual crappy ones?

this one is 7.2 mp, much higher than my old one, a 3.2. im hoping that allows me to take close ups and more detailed photos.

ill keep playing with this one before i decide, but what do you guys think?

remember, my skills are lacking, so it may be me and not the camera.

You'll have to send the knives to me so I can take comparison photos and give you my full opinion:)

Jaxx's camera....i dunno, I thought his pictures were a little on the grainy side, but maybe he was using his INFI phone camera? He must have one, afterall, he's got everything else! :p ;)

looking good, i suck at pics, my best ones are taken outside on cloudy days.

me too. i used to use an old canon ae1 with black and white film. took pics of my friends surfing and stuff, those came out great. but that was almost twenty years ago.

guess that skill is long gone.

maybe a better camera can at least make my photos less blurry.

For the money that is a very good camera. I'd give it strong consideration for a small camera.

I got my GF a Nikon 6.2 MP digital SLR with lens for about $580.00 and if size wasn't an issue for you then you should consider that kind of camera too.

i can get the lumix for 225.00.

size is a main concern, though i would like to eventually get a larger slr type.

How's it so far next to the Leica?:D ...Hey, is the flash on? Maybe try raising the ISO setting to 400 or 800 but remember the higher the setting, the grainier the image. Also I usually turn off the lights in the small room and rely only on the flash to provide light. Keeps the yellowing down. It should have also have a white balance setting option, try the upside down lightbulb, i.e. indoor light if you need to use the room lights...
One of the reasons I prefer the Canon for shooting the knives on black is because the flash swivels, and I bounce the light off the white ceiling. but if you hold the pocket camera a little farther away, it should more evenly distribute the light from the flash. Have fun with it! :D:thumbup

EDITED to add: Just saw the pic of the SE2007...AD(?) and your badge. GOOD lighting and color saturation!! Nice contrast and shadow play.:thumbup::) ...Wait, that's a GW, ain't it? LOL

the reviews i read comparing the leica and lumix basically said they are very similar. the optics are the same, as is the body.

leica tweaks the electronics, so ultimately probably takes better pics.

but for me, who probably won't ever know the difference, it was hard to argue with the price on the lumix.

my friends uncle is a professional photographer, and uses the same leica you have to produce poster size prints he sells for several thousand dollars each.

if money is no object, he recommended the leica, but for a working man, he said the lumix will be more than sufficient.

just messing with this one, ill buy my own and learn the specifics and read the manual to assist me.

Pick up some vellum/phellum(?) paper. It's basically thick tracing paper. The flash drowns out the colors. You could even use a box with some white trash bags, single layer and use those to filter out light on a bright day. Then it takes a bit of tweaking the lights to get good pics.
