I have HIKV and am proud of it. Right now I have a HI $1700 wish list and little $$ to do anything about it. The current crises is that I have been thinking of buying a "real" kuk for a long time now, I currently own a 12" AK and a 20" Kobra, but I feel I need something big and heavy now. The everyday man eating kuk and the utility kuk role have been filled at my place. (That reminds me to get a JKM-1 soon.) However, I feel that I am missing part of the beauty of the kuk and that I need to get another to really understand what I am missing. (then another, and another few after that)

1. Is this "normal"?
(Whatever "normal" may be)

2. What would ya'll get?

3. Where online can I get a big diamond stone that I can put the traditional single bevel edge on a JKM-1? (Gonna get one with my next order)

Ps. The Naginata is coming along. Got the first designs back from my engineering nerds.. I mean friends. Really interesting.

DMT makes good hones, but honestly I can't much tell the difference between one brand and another. Diamonds is diamonds, as far as I can tell.

And be careful at first . . . when they're new they really rip, and when they're broken in they get less aggressive.

:
Doc is correct about all the diamond hones cutting pretty much the same.
I have 2 small EZE-Lap's and 1 larger one and also 3 of the DMT Duofolds.
I prefer the DMT's because they don't seem to load up as quickly for me with the small holes to collect the fines off of the steel.

When you get your JKM-1 it's just a matter of having the patience to put the single bevel on the edge.
And if you stay with it you will have a knife that's probably gonna be the sharpest one in your collection.
To finish the single edge bevel it's necessary to strop the burr off very carefully by keeping the angle true and flat.
If the angle is raised at all while stropping it will cause the edge to be very slightly convexed.
And it's very tempting to do just that.
I had to learn the hard way on one of my Finnish Puukko's.
