Testing sharpness and sharpening said blade for beginners?

Stropping on sandpaper and cardboard/scrap leather/scrap denim with metal polishing compounds tends to give one real nice edge. Fold paper into thirds vertically and stand it freely. Cut it vertically and see how you do. You can flick the top of your nail from the spine to the edge to check for a burr on that side of the blade (tends to veer to one side). Remove gently with stropping.

I was given a new Manix 2 S30V (not the XL) at the end of April. I have not cut much with it, but I would like to test the sharpness of the blade. What would be the most effective way of doing so (without injuring myself) ? (This means that I would rather not shave with it. LOL.) How sharp is the edge from the Spyderco factory? What equipment would I need in order to produce a razor sharp edge? (I don't know where to begin.) Good advice is most welcome. Thanks in advance... :)

Okay sharpy, what's the latest with your technique? When do the stitches come out of your thumb?

maybe he's a samurai. those guys are loath to feel the edges of their katanas and wakizashis. i was kinda afraid of my vg-10 delica's edge when it was new. i felt it and it felt sticky, like it was really cutting into my skin with just a light touch.

That's because the samurais didn't want to mar the edges, not because they were afraid of it. ;)

I haven't tried to sharpen the Manix 2 yet as I've been researching a Manix 2 XL. (I may just have to pull the trigger on one.) And there's no stitches in my thumb - yet.

Like other people said, just try cutting some paper. Newspaper would do nicely. As for sharpening, if you don't want to spend a lot of money right now getting a high-end set up, use the sandpaper/mouse pad trick. I use it right now, and am getting a mirror edge on all of my knives. I use 2k grit. Cost me about $4 total.
