testing steel with a magnet?

is using a magnet to test unknown steel a good indicator? when a magnet does not stick what is that telling me?

I got this by typing in "magnetism" in the now infamous search function.

Other words to try would be magnet, Currie point or ferro-magnetism and you may get more than the 40 listed here.
