Testing the Machetes

Dylan going at it.

I hate being the self-righteous safety preacher but that stance does seem quite horrendous to me in terms of safety.

Yea, the snow on the ground there was more than ga has seen in 20 or so years, so the mailman just didn't work rounds last week. I think the packages went out on Friday.

He's got his feet at shoulder width, nice and sturdy, the ground is flat. The cut is being made paralell to his feet, not toward them so that if the blow misses or glances he won't be getting his ankle. The branch is actually longer than it looks, so his hand really wasn't in any danger. I think the angle of the camera is the culprit.

BUT, if you have a specific safety concern, or any kind of suggestion, I'm willing to listen. Pointing out that it seems horrendous to you is not giving me much to work with.

Main concern is left hand of course. Does seem pretty close to the cut.
Also general position seems a bit awkward. Maybe kneeing or something.

Those look killer Andy. Nice work bro. Your lil one is gettin big. Shame they cant stay that age forever.

As far as Dylans stance goes....When Im using a blade or hatchet that size, I try to do the chopping on my knees ala Mors so if I miss, the blade goes into the dirt and no chance of buryin it in my shin. However, I think the pic angle is the culprit. Kinda hard to judge tech from a pic.

Anywho, great pics. Good to see you and D gettin out in the Snow for some machetecraft. I often overlook the machete during the winter. I should pack one of mine out and see how it holds up to the frozen hardwoods.

Great looking machetes. The 12" looks very practical for my neck of the woods. You have some really nice knives on your website.

Yea, I think we coulda done better with the hand position. I really wasn't concerned about the glancing blow being an issue this time, and we weren't really interested in kneeling in the snow. We were using pretty light strokes though, just in case. No wailing. Thanks for the input! Don't hold back, I'm no expert.

Maybe I missed it, but what steel will be used for the machete's? TIA

1075 steel tapered from butt to tip. I get them unground, and do all the grinding myself, so I know the HT hasn't been burned out.

I'd love to be in on that! I've got lots of downed limbs and salal trails to clear.;)

Cool! Feel like organizing it? That'd be really helpful, and you could go first!

Thanks!! I got my start making knives right here, and still, almost all my knives are for this group of users.

Andy, Thanks and I would be happy to organize this if you want. This week is nuts for me and mine, but I will call you if that's alright and try to get this together next week. Sound alright?

Sounds good. Just call anytime. I'll finish the passaround machete by tomorrow evening.

Actually, my cuts were very close to the ground. That but you might be thinking is the cut is actually just a gnarled up knot. Plus, That way, if the machete had glanced off the stick, it would have impacted the ground only a couple of inches away so it couldn't come back and bite me.

I was plenty sturdy. I thought about kneeling down and it wasn't necessary. Believe me, I don't make cuts with any tool unless I'm sure of the safety. I have a constant reminder in my numb, nerve damaged index finger that keeps me from doing stupid stuff.

....stupid stuff having to do with knives. Drinking and women are a different story all together. In fact, I could pretty mcuh always use a good safety chaperone when I'm dealing with both of those dangerous materials. lol

More pics of the newest batch just for showing.

I'm personally very excited about the 12" version because of what a versatile bushcrafting tool it is. Light, easy to carry. The perfect way to round out a Nessmuk trio, much safer than a double bit hatchet, and it'll dig, which the small hatchet wouldn't.
