Testing "Tough" Fixed Blades

I see no point in testing a knife to the point of destruction when they are tasks that nobody uses a knife for. I could destroy any knife if I wanted to.

When I get a knife I use it when I get a chance for the tasks that I always use knives for. I recently picked up a Busse ASH-1 in a trade but unfortunately have not had a chance to go camping since but I may just take in the woods behind my house to chop some limbs and make kindling to see how it does.

This kind of thing is about it for me. I think the worst thing I do with knives is open tin cans which does tend to dull the point. Although I have not done it a tough one is to cut ice blocks for igloo construction, I have heard of a Randall 14 breaking while doing this task.

Your ASH-1 point won't get dull opening tin cans, and it won't break from chopping ice. In fact, if you clamp it in a bench vise and wail away on it with a sledge hammer, chances are your vise will break before your knife does.

The only reason we know that is because of the destruction testing that's been done on Busses by people like Noss4.

I don't care what Noss did to his Battle Mistress.

Mine sleeps in her own little bed every night, with a little feather pillow for her head...

If I have a knife worth $500 you can bet I'm gonna treat it with all due care!

That's just how I was brought up. ;)

I think Uncle Jarvis had a video of him wailing away at a pipe or steel bar or something with a straight handled Satin Jack. He'd bang away and then show you a close up of the unharmed edge. There was a certain viciousness to the performance that I liked. He made his point.
