So, could someone explain wtf happened? It's all gibberish to me.

What I don't get is why this kinda of stuff keeps happening. Every once in a while there's the database or cloudfire errors for a brief time, but this one was pretty serious.

Is it actual hacker attacks, or is a server problem. I mean, Bladeforums is pretty big - the biggest knife forum on the planet. But the other forum I frequent (XDA - Android development/hacking) dwarfs BF. 345,000+ active members vs 18,450). And they're never down. I have no idea what software they use, but I don't think it's the same as here, so maybe it's vBulletin that sucks? I do see that they're hosted by Leaseweb, so maybe that's why?

I'm just spitballing here. I just don't understand why this forum keeps going down while ones that see far more traffic don't. I'm not complaining; I know there's nobody more frustrated with this than Kevin.

It's a combination of problems, many of which are outside our control. Prior to yesterday's outage we were undergoing a UDP attack that took down our hosts entire network unless they "null routed" our server; cloud flare eliminated that. After that we had to repair damage which was made much more difficult because of obstacles from the hosting company and their attempts to "fix" the attacks.

Comparing our site to others is in many ways apples to oranges. XDA is a developer website, comprised entirely of developer professionals who have no problem hacking up scripts and I'll bet have done so to their version of vB5 (which has been widely criticized for it's problems with large forums). Given those criticisms and the difficulties reverting back to previous versions of vB from 5, I'm reluctant to jump whole hog into a different version that has been called a resource hog by everyone who's used it. If you'll also notice, they have ads everywhere which means tons of revenue coming in for their site, which means a lot more money to throw at problems. In other words, they have a lot of advantages we don't.

I've already had talks with our hosting management about what happened on Thurs / Fri and will be dealing with them on Monday again about the issue, after we've had a chance to detail the problems. In the meantime, we have more stuff that will be going on this evening as we continue to work on issues that have been presented.

The site came up quickly this AM (0843 PST). Thanks for your efforts - greatly appreciated.

Thanks again Kevin most of us old timers appreciate the difficulties you face in managing this forum with the limited resources available.

I personally had to oversee recovery efforts from 1130pm on till 4 this morning. I'm not going into details now, but discussions are being had about contracted services not being honored.

Hope things can get sorted out without a complete exploitation of control. Thanks for everything, Spark. It does not go without appreciation for everything you've been/are doing to solve these problems (by most members at least).

Yes definitely glad to see it up and running. Sorry you were up till 4 am fixing it. And on top of that, great communication you kept on facebook whether it was messaging or posting updates on the progress.
