Awesome giveaway, Charlie!

I'll be camping out in the middle of the track at Sebring International Raceway this weekend for the 12 Hours of Sebring race. Not your typical campsite but I'll be sleeping in a tent. There's nothing quite like waking up in the morning to the sounds of howling race car engines and the smell of high octane race fuel! :D

I'll make sure to get some pictures!

EDIT: Here's a couple photos from last weekend!

Our campsite Saturday morning:

And our campsite after the monsoon that rolled through Saturday afternoon:

More carnage from the monsoon:

The knife I had in my pocket all weekend:

A severe thunderstorm rolled through on Saturday afternoon, blowing over part of our campsite and soaking the ground. Luckily we all had our rain gear ready. The winds were so bad that they had to red flag the race for over 2 hours. I didn't get any good shots of the cars, unfortunately. I put my camera away after the rain. Evan came along too and I think he has a few good ones of the cars. Hopefully he will post them here!

EDIT #2: Here's a fun shot of some friends and me at the same race a couple years ago:

My idea of "camping" is staying in a hotel.*

So, I'm out! :D

Thank you, Charlie, for your continued generosity in our midst, in knives, knowledge, and good company.

* Okay, okay, maybe even a "cabin."

Well thank you Charlie for an opportunity in this generous GAW. I love camping! I grew up in the White Mountain National Forrest and my family looked forward to camping each year. My dad and I were big into backpacking but as a family we'd always go to Maidstone State Park in VT. What a wonderful campground that brings back so many great memories. I've brought my family there a couple times while we we've been back on our furloughs. We went with my parents and it made it that much more special, my girls loved it! A SAK was always on hand, that and my old Buck Duke which was the first knife I purchased as a child. I don't have a pick of that old knife, it's still back in the USA, but it served me well.

This past summer my family was able to return to the USA for 5 weeks so our adopted daughter (our third child) could meet my father who has ALS. During the time back, my brother had planned a 'guy' trip to Maidstone. That and a plan to climb Mt Washington again, this was my 13th time. I didn't bring my wife and kids this time, but the trip was still nostalgic! I was the camp cook, I used a couple small cooking knives made by Leif. I carried a Esee Candiru on the hike. Camping/hiking/backpacking will always hold a special place in my heart. I look forward to future outings with my family! I only wish that my father was able to share the experience with me again. As it stands, I will feel blessed if I get to see him again this side of glory. Come on end of the year, hurry up and get here so we can come on back Stateside!

Here's a shot from the campsite looking at the lake and then a shot from the lake looking into the campsite.

Very generous GAW, Good Sir!
I'm out, haven't been able to go camping in way too long. Maybe after (if) I ever retire I'll be able to go camping, fishing, and hunting again.

Okay, now I'm homesick. I've stood in that exact spot (and thus, likely the others as well), six times.

Home.

~ P.

(I stayed at the Lake of the Clouds Hut in the midst of a childhood trek. "Camping"?)

((The last time up, a few years back, my friend and I did cave and take the tootsie train back down the mountain.))

I miss it too!!! Sadly my parents moved away because of my dad's ALS. We'll still go up to visit, but it won't be able to be as frequent as before.

I've got camping and fly-fishing on the brain this time of year. We don't have many good trout streams here in Washington state, and they are usually crowded, so lakes get the nod. Here are photos of a couple favorites (which shall remain un-named).

A couple things are necessary to camp big. Some BIG SPACE:

And a big truck to haul all your campin' gear!

A little dawg with a BIG attitude! "Find fish boy!!!"

"Good boy!"

Another camp:

"Dad, wait! You forgot me!"

Knife content:

Easy does it!

Now, I wasn't with these guys, on this particular trip, but they told me all about it when they got back to town. This photo was taken while they were trying to decide - "Who gets to ride the donkey"?

Since everyone's posting pictures of valleys, here's a shot of mine. Our place is out of frame to the left as you look at the picture.

Hat Creek. About 75-miles West of us. I believe "rockgolfer" himself has been here with his Dad. A great trout fishing and camping spot.

Truth be told>: I'm really not into camping these days. This is pretty much it for me. The wife snuck a shot of me napping with the TV clicker in my hand and our two Doxies on my lap. We really don't need to go camping anymore as you can see by looking out the windows, in this picture, we kinda live in the boonies and are more or less camping all the time.

Although there's a knife on the window sill in the above picture here's a knife to keep it knifey.

Barry, I want to go fishing with you. That looks like a great weekend trip!

I'll have pictures coming up in a later post when I can find some good ones.

I'm very fond of camping. As an immigrant kid our vacations involved cars and tents. Not as fancy as the trips many of my classmates took, but I treasured them. I make a point to continue the practice, but for different reasons. In an increasingly connected world I think it's important to head outdoors and get away for a bit. Not just for my sanity, but to separate the kids from their precious electronic devices.

One of my favorite places in the entire world.

Our current set up. With "room" for eight, this one is much more luxurious than the 4-person tents we used growing up.

I bring along entirely too much steel when we go. What else can I say other than I like knives? :D

Thanks for your generosity Charlie.

Thanks Charlie!

These are pictures from a friends house on Vancouver Island - my other two friends and myself had ridden there from Illinois, through the Canadian Rockies -
DSC07367.JPG

When I camp from my motorcycle, I have a little two-person child's tent that I use, because it is small, easy to set up and weighs almost nothing; and so easy to pack on the motorcycle.
That is my little tent on the left - I stretch the tent out a little when I stretch myself all the way out as it is 6' inside and I am 6'2" - but it works out just fine. It is actually a pretty good little tent, good and water-tite and keeps me out of the elements when necessary, and the bugs out when up north in the land of the huge mosquitos!
DSC07371.JPG

My motorcycle is a well-worn 97 Kawasaki Concours, and it has seen Lake Louise twice, Vancouver and Vancouver Island,Most of the Canadian Provinces, Alaska, most of the 50 United States, including Washington / Oregon twice, Bar Harbor Maine, Key West for the Fantasyfest, Vegas and most of the desert southwest and California....we get around let's say.

The picture below is a typical load out including all my camping gear and my extra-sexy "taxi-cab beads" on the seat.

I am thoroughly enjoying your pictures folks!!
I want to know more about shaving with a fixed blade, Barry!!
Not that I shave!!:D

No idea how to check how often I have posted in this community, but I lurk a lot. Everybody here knows so much more about slipjoints than I do I never feel like I have anything useful to add :P

If it turns out I don't qualify, that's fine.

This is at Gold's Bluff Beach a few years ago.

Awesome Giveaway, Charlie. Very generous. We do a bit of camping here and there - it's nice to get away from the big city.

Here is a nice little spot in the woods, with the wife and boy (and dog).

Thanks Charlie. I'm not normally one for contests, but this one kind of hits home for me. Our whole family centers around camp experiences.

Here's my daughter Abby and I at the top of the Goodnow Mountain trailhead, at the top of the fire tower. I was so proud of her, that she was brave enough to go all the way to the top. A stranger was kind enough to take a photo for us.

Here is Abby with her grandpa a few years ago, "helping him" shuck corn for dinner. The picture was taken on the stairs of our family cabin.
