Texas Governor Rick Perry on Friday signed the Texas Switchblade Ban Repeal bill, HB1862, the culmination of an aggressive lobbying effort by Knife Rights. The effective date for this law is September 1, 2013. Please note that existing local restrictions, such as in San Antonio, remain in effect!

HB1862 is the FIFTH Pro-Knife Bill Knife Rights passed this year!
HB1862 is the FOURTH Switchblade Ban Repeal Knife Rights passed this year!

Knife Rights would like to thank Representative Harold Dutton and Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa for sponsoring this bill. We would also like to thank Knife Rights volunteer W. Scott Lewis for his tenacious assistance on the ground in Austin.

Thanks also to all of you who called and emailed your legislators in Austin when we asked for support. Those calls and emails make a big difference when we are on the ground lobbying in the Capitol.

Knife Rights will be back in 2015 to fix the rest of Texas knife laws.

Thanks Doug, and everyone else who helped out behind the scenes.
It would be great to hammer Texas with preemption next year.
This is a fight were winning and should pick up steam from here.

Thanks again, Jeff

Does this mean balisongs are now legal to own and carry in TX as long as they fit under the 5.5" blade law?(assuming no other regional restrictions).

That's is friggin awesome. Pretty silly that I can carry a concealed .45, but not an auto blade. This will free up ~ half my collection for EDC. A whole hearted THANK YOU from Texas. I'm sending a contribution to support future efforts.

Most awesome!

Now, if we could just get more states to come on board with this. I know neighboring Kansas (My neighbor, not Texas) is repealing the switchblade law, and Missouri allows collecting, but not carry. Hopefully we are all moving in the right direction, and can begin carrying what we want.

Thanks, Doug, et. al.

Your support can help make that happen. Before I go shop for a new celebratory auto, I got myself a Knife Rights membership here. A Bargain @ $32. :

I also started a tread here, asking other BF members to join. Hope I'm not breaking the rules:

Very grateful, Doug. Thanks for your dedicated efforts.

Just to be clear, the restrictions on length and double edged are still in place?

Blade length and double edged restrictions remain. Do not carry a double edged blade or a blade over 5.5 inches in length unless you are actually hunting or fishing or some other legal activity for which the knife would be used. I think balisongs are considered gravity knives under state law, but I am not a lawyer. There may be specific local statutes concerning them.

As near as I can tell, you will still not need a license to carry a pocket knife, auto or not.

Thanks Doug, Sadly I live in San Antonio so no auto carry for me. Maybe in a few years. Nonetheless I will get an auto so I will be ready :D

That's my governor. He once killed a coyote with a laser sighted .380
Now if I only knew what to buy.
I like the OTFs. Any suggestions?

Awesome work Knife Rights, thank you for averything you do!

Now I'm suddenly in the market for an auto. This will be fun, because I know absolutely nothing about them!

Thank you, Doug and Knife Rights, for all the work you do to maintain or improve our rights!

Hadn't seen the effective date before. Thanks for posting it. Now if only people would start getting the Microtech Scarabs in stock...
