Dunno, I have a realtive in Texas though. But I had to get this is in, as long as you have a firearm under your control and you haven't been convicted of a felony you can carry a gun w/ out permit concealed or not (expect in Government Bulidings, Bars, Chruches etc.) BUT YOU CAN'T CARRY A SWITCHBLADE LEGALLY UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES!

I can assure you that having a handgun on or about your person, without a concealed carry license, is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in the county jail, and worse if in an establishment that sells or serves alcohol. J-man, your statement is correct for long guns only, meaning rifles and shotguns. There are certain circumstances when it is OK to carry a handgun without a permit, such as while participating in certain sports, on premises under your control, and the "traveling" defense. I have not read anything on HB 840 yet, but since fixed blade knives are legal, it seems silly to prohibit switchblades, IMHO. BTW, balisongs fall under the category of gravity knife, and are illegal for carry in Texas.

Visiting the site "Texas Legislature Online", I read HB840.
It was introduced by a Representative Howard. It has been referred to the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence.
Among other things, it does appear to remove switchblades from the illegal weapon catagory. It does not appear to place them anywhere else. It would seem that switchblades would be classed with any other folding knife and subject to the same restrictions.
Now, I am not a lawyer. I don't know how lawyers and bureaucrats will interpret this, if passed. There are a couple of other things this bill appears to do that I may not like. I'll look into that.
However, from a knife enthusiast point of view, I'd go for it.
