Texas pocket knives, first impressions.

I've lived in and around Austin my entire life. Georgetown is basically a suburb, so yeah everything on the square is picked over. Probably have better luck in other parts of town. Georgetown and sun city have a lot of old people (sun city only allows old people actually), so I imagine there are some good garage sales and pawn shop finds. You need go drive east on 79 from round Rock to Taylor, stop at Louie Mueller BBQ and (not or) Taylor Cafe, then check out around Taylor or even Rockwall. The BBQ is worth the trip. If you ever wanna catch up for a beer and show off some knifes let me know. I'm just down the road. Shoot me a PM.

The antique mall in Round Rock isn't bad either. It's near on 35 at Hester's crossing

Gents, can we please stay on the topic of knives and do so without listing names of non-BF dealers that I have to remove from the posts?

I hope you find some knife stores soon. Seems like traditional in everything and everywhere is almost a thing of the past. I for one miss how things used to be. I know I'm getting old but I miss mom and pop hardware stores and the knife displays they always had, drug store soda fountains, roadside dinners, full service gas stations and so on. Don't get me wrong I do like a lot of the modern conveniences we have but I think in the process of going forward we've lost a lot of what made America great.
I'm too young to have ever experienced those things but I wish I could have.

My best tip is to go out in the country to the smaller towns and hit the local feed stores. Best knives I ever bought across the counter was at one on those stores out in West Texas.....big dusty Schrade and Case displays from the 80's stocked with 80's-90's era knives. I ended up buying a Case CV Stockman, a Uncle Henry King Ranch and a Schrade Hone Steel in such a store. I could have spent $500.00 if I'd had it on me.

I chuckled a little when I read the original post. I remember my girlfriend at the time dragging me into all of those antique shops in Georgetown. I wasn't very happy to be there but I spent my entire time in them looking at the pocket knives displayed, hoping to find some gems. This was a little more than ten years ago now, but I scored a damascus blade Case small coke bottle and a small Robeson pen knife. Less than $30 each if I remember correctly.

In NJ, PA, MD and DE, I cleaned out a couple old hardware and feed stores. I picked over the remnants from a small hardware store in Ocean City MD, all of their Schrades. I ended up giving most away as gifts to family and friends.

Here is a couple of finds here locally. Colonial mountain guide in carbon steel with pruner blade and sheepsfoot (Flea Market $5), and a Craftsman scout in carbon steel with pen blade (Pawnshop $12). Both were loose and rusty, more so on the Mountain guide, but both were hardly ever sharpened, if at all. So after some tightening of the pins/pivots, and some cleaning, both are solid users. I am liking the Craftsman a lot. The Mountain Guide was quite rusty, but still has years left. I did not take the time to grind out all of the pitting because I didn't feel it necessary.

Add that to the Queen in my other post, and a couple of case knives that have come and gone, and there are gems to be had. They just don't pop up every day. That's all part of the hunt.

Also I totally jealous of that Damascus Case Coke Bottle above. Really nice find there.

A friend of mine found a Bark River, I am not sure which model but I am thinking the Gameskeeper, at a quite large flea market in central PA, for 50 bucks. I make sure I visit there about a dozen times a year, and told him he should check it out. He went with his wife, and at the outside tables, found it.

What I get for telling people about my spots ;). Actually, he's great people and a very talented outdoorsman, and quickly put it to work.

No truer words ever spoken.
