Hello everyone,
I have been looking at different threads and trying to make sure I'm not repeating something that is already up, but I can't find anything.
I live in the Plano area of Texas and am struggling to find a steel in the area, anyone know of local shops or distributers? I have looked at and like the pricing on admiral steel and was thinking of going that route, but if I can find a local business, I would be happier to give them my business.
Thank you in advance,

David

Texas knife is in Houston. Might be your best bet but shipping is cheaper than 8 hours of driving if your making a small order.

You're not too far from me. Good to see fellow DFW makers on BF. Anyway, give Scott a call

David, welcome to BladeForums. There is nobody local for blade steels. I have a really good relationship with Discount Steel and tried to get them to carry some steels but the big office said no. A lot of makers buy from Admiral but they have been dinged many times for sending the wrong steel or just plain inferior product. New Jersey Steel Baron is, in my opinion, the absolute best to buy steel from. Aldo is ruthless in the purchasing of only the highest quality steels, he will never buy an inferior product just to have it on his shelves and he has everything tested. If you want to drive somewhere and buy your steel and see just about every other thing you need for knifemaking, go visit Jantz. They are just about 30 minutes into Oklahoma on I-35, Davis I believe. One nice thing about Jantz proximity is that you can call them in the morning and have it tomorrow.

Bob have you ever dropped by SB Specialty Steel? They carry a decent selection of great blade steel. Scott is accustomed to dealing with knifemakers as well.

Mike, I've never heard of them before. Sounds like I'm gonna have to get off the farm and make a road trip. Thanks!

Well I'm hundreds of miles from you so sorry :P
(sorry just the title and HAD to comment welcome to bladeforums btw!)

The place to get top grade knife steel in Texas is the same as in Alaska....it is called your front porch. Go on Aldo's site and buy what you need/want. It will be sitting on your doorstep in a few days. Shipping is really low cost. I just ordered three thick 48" bars of W-2 and the shipping was $17.

Generally I would agree 100% with you, Stacy. In this instance, convenience and availability trump my loyalty to a fellow forumite. Though, if Aldo carried CTS steels, I might be persuaded. :D

Thank you all for the welcome and advice. I will have to look into a couple of these places. Like I was saying, I would love to stay local, but if I have to I will out source to get things going. Where is SB Specialty located?

Awesome! Thank you Stan! I will definitely take a look at this place. I haven't been on here long but already love this community!
