I get a textured feel from bead blasting the finished handle scales.. I have one small cabinet just for this purpose... I use glass bead only for this.. Aluminum Oxide, and Silicon Carbide dont seem to work as well for me.. I use Silicon Carbide for blasting the blades, but for handles the Glass Bead works the best IMO.. The more aggressive media makes G-10 look grey, and it never does seem to get "Textured"..
I believe Masecraft supplies offers a G10 than can offer a very nicely textured surface. I saw a few blades at the recent NY Show where a few makers used this G10. RJ Martin comes to mind. I believe I saw it used on one of Bud Nealys blades as well. In any case this G10 needs to have its top layer literally peeled off! Underneath will be freshly "exposed" grippy G10. RJ explained that the slabs need to be flat as rounding off or contouring any edges will negate any textured surface. Interesting...
I got some textured blue G-10 from Halpern Titanium a while back. It had a clear plastic film that had to be peeled off to expose the pre-textured surface.
Rounding this material too much will remove the flat textured surface.
