Heya party people !

I'm getting some G10 today but after doing some research I see that I assumed it was textured on one side like the scales you get on production knives... Assume , you know what that means. :D

Anyways , wondering if you folks had any ideas on how to texture G10 ?

I'm really considering that carved/chipped obsidian kinda look on it , would a Dremel and a cone grind stone work ? Will this stuff get hot and melt like plastic ?

Thanks , you guys rock !

G-10 won't melt. I think the dremel will work fine. However, it will ruin your bits pretty quickly. Especially at high speeds. Pretty abrasive stuff.

Don't use a stone with your dremel, use the small rubber wheels with sanding drums on them... works great! I think most knifemakers just use small wheels on their grinders, but I have seen one Tom Krein knife where he sent the scales out to a gunstock company and they checkered them! I'll see if i can find a pic... found it!

MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A RESPIRATOR!!!!!!

The phenols and such that gas off are nasty, overlooking that the fibers are fiberglass! Eye protection is a must, too.

I also saw one like the one in the photo It was done Great. Looked good Clean lines, sending it out was also expensive for a single handle if I remember correctly.

Ok , thanks for the replies folks.

The sanding drum deal just gave me an idea , hope it works !
:D

Thanks!

Carbide cutters for the dremel also work well, you can get a little finer than the drums. Blasting the G10 will put texture on it, although it won't be carved. I'd recommend either blasting or buffing to a high buff after carving it. Both ways will look very nice.

I use danish oil on my G10 after sanding or blasting. It shines it back up and lasts longer than just oiling it.

Thanks for the hints.

Man , I wish it would have came in the mail yesterday , I was really looking forward to hooking up my Groove this weekend. :D
