Snagged this pic off the Bussekin FB page. We have never seen the likes of this before, a blade fresh out of the heat treat furnace.

Very interesting. What can we glean from this pic? Discuss.

Blades are usually quenched right after heat. Hmm maybe they spray it with nitrogen gas? Very interesting.

Since the blade is pre-ground... does this mean that the edge gets hotter in heat treatment than the rest of the knife due to the thinness at the edge?

For years I've heard anecdotal tales here that INFI doesn't reach it's real potential until it's been sharpened a couple times... my own personal experience verifies this. Is this because Busse heat treats the blades already roughly ground (saber ground in this pic) instead of heating a blank and then grinding it thinner? The latter would seem to guarantee more consistency... but what the hell do I know?!!!

Very interesting pic, though... thanks for sharing...

Just guessing here, but maybe because it's the thickest steel on the knife? Maybe it doesn't heat as thoroughly or the surface cools faster?

I believe it is thinner since it is cut out for lightening, thus, the Light Brigade designation.

Edge is always ground last, never before heat treatment, or even tempering, in my experience

Instant wound sterilisation and cauterization.

That should stop the zombies getting any (more) infections!

Great picture!

That was what I thought... although this one isn't sharpened to it's final stage it is ground down pretty thin.

I wonder if this causes any problems making the thinner parts heat treatment different than the thicker parts? How does that affect performance?

So did Beef get Branded right after the pic :)
