TGLB or NMSFNO?

AzTim is right. If you are looking for performance to weight the basic or any resiprene c handled knives are the way to go. I have a son of dogfather that chops about the same as my nmsfno and better than my sarsquatch. I dont have a scale but i think the sarsquatch is the lightest followed closely by the son of dogfather then the nmsfno.

The sarsqutch is one of my favorites because its thinner than typical busses and still looks cool.

You're going to love your TG! One recommendation though- the edge on that knife is thick, and while it'll chop all day long and still look new at the end of the day, you'll probably want to re-profile or convex the edge for finer cutting tasks...it's the one thing I felt needed changing on mine, but otherwise it's awesome and a great way to start your new addiction ;)

Congrats on your new knife! Looking forward to hearing how it works out for you

When chopping, I think the added weight of the NMSFNO would easily trump the difference in blade grind, considering you can always reprofile, but you can't add weight.
My NMSFNO is my go-to woods knife because it is more portable than my NMFBM, but can still chop with authority, unlike my BJ.
After swinging the larger Busse's, the TGLB just seems too small to do any serious chopping.

Haha, thanks, maybe the NMSFNO will be next lol!

It's funny, people seem to be drawn to this forum in search of the ONE ultimate knife. And from what I've seen it doesnt look like anyone sticks to just one!!

Having said that, my next purchase will be a quality folder like ZT0350 or 0300, or an emerson cqc-8... one of those with my TG and the kukri my sister is getting me from Nepal, I should have a nice little set-up :)

Hate to say it but I bought a ZT0350 while waiting for the Busse folder and I have to say that the Busse isn't as necessary as I thought it was going to be. I love the 0350!

Haha, brilliant. It looks like the 0350 blade is quite small in the photos, does it feel that way in the hand?

I've actually ended up, as I mentioned a bit earlier, with an original TG because I live in the UK and someone was selling one in the UK. At 20oz, it's hardly a lightweight, and I would expect it to be able to have reasonable chopping capability.

You mentioned that you have difficulty in sharpening knives ... do a bit of internet searching for an Edge Pro ... read how they work ... these should cope well with any re-profiling job you might need on the edge of the TG and whilst expensive ... if they enable you to sharpen well ... are worth it:thumbup:

Thanks, that's really helpful. They seem to be retailing at about 250GBP on ebay. Which is fine, if annualised over the next 50 years. Having said that, I really need to learn how to sharpen properly. I think part of the problem is that all the sharpening videos on youtube seem to be with quite thin knives, whereas my BJ is pretty hefty right behind the edge. I haven't had issues sharpening my other knives, like the Becker Necker or SAKs.

Have you got any tips on how best to sharpen a busse or similarly chunky knife?

Congrats on scoring an original TG. That's my most wanted Busse atm.

Thanks, theyre actually not that easy to come by, especially in the UK. But ive been stalking the exchange for weeks and I havent seen many.

Ps, if I don't take to it for some reason when I get it, I'll drop you a PM to see if we could arrange something.

That would be cool but just so you know, I'm in the US (you said you're in the UK) plus I just spent my knife money on a TGLB a few weeks ago.

That being said, I think your gonna love your TG.

No prob. I'm not planning on hating it. Despite the fact that the TG seems to be one of the less loved models (or maybe its afficionados don't frequent the forum as much??) I think it's going to suit me very well.

However, I will send you a quick email first if I don't get on with it -- I'm sure others on this friendly forum would do the same for me if they had a blade they didnt want but they knew I was after.... just to give you first option before I tried to put it on the exchange

I greatly appreciate that my friend :)

The thing with your Boss Jack and Team Gemini is that when they come from Busse the thickness of the steel behind the edge is designed for guys who might want their knives to cope with breeze blocks or evac from vehicles or similar hard use/military applications which the knife can stand up to if used in that way. This results usually in a 25 degree either side ( 50 inclusive ) edge with a thick shoulder behind it. On the basis you can always remove steel but never add it Busse leaves it to the "user" to reprofile if they wish.

Doing this quickly is the thing ... guys have done labours of love for hours on end working with various grits of wet and dry paper on a phone book stropping the blade to remove metal and give a high releif convex edge ... or others such as myself have learned how to use a belt sander using differing grades of belts to reprofile the edge ... which is much quicker but needs practise to get right ... then there are half way easy methods such as the Edge Pro or Lansky systems etc where if you use diamond stones you can remove steel quite efficiently.

A belt 1 x 30 belt sander from B&Q is actually quite cheap ... finding the good belts needs a bit of "google fu" ... you can get a good result from the cheaper belts for wood if need be but to do this you need a bit of time on the machine so you know when the grit has eroded to the point that it has become a good "linishing" belt for the finer edge finishing. People always advise working to begin with on cheap machete's or other knives ... it is the lift of the wrist as you get to the belly and pulling the knife away from the belt so you dont catch the tip which is important ... otherwise the belly is too thin a grind and the tip can be rounded off to look like a pizza cutter ...

Personally I prefer the belt sander option as it is a great skill once mastered ... there are a lot of sharpening tuition posts on here but to use the search engine and find them you would need to upgrade to Gold Membership ... handy though because then you can also send PM's and sell on the exchange if need be.

An alternative is to go onto the Scrapyard Forum and use the search engine there as a member which is free and look for posts by either me ( I am Steel Fan on there ) or by Horn Dog. Vic ( Horn Dog ) taught me how to do this by his pic's and instructions and he has some great skills. He started off with a simple Harbour Freight sander.

If using these indoors buy some face masks for the steel dust ... Vic suggests outdoor use but that is'nt as easy over here ... the dust gets in your throat ... not good ...

Once you have re-profiled a few knives you can have a go with your more expensive Busse's ...

Otherwise for a safe set of results ... go Edge Pro and read around on what guys like Ankerson have used to put some great edges on their knives.

You can get a belt sander though for a fraction of the price ...

Where are you in the UK ?

Good Luck with all of this ... I know it seems a big task ... but the satisfaction of being able to alter your knives as to how you want them is amazing ...

As far as a folder goes, everyone talked about a CR Sebenza. got a large one with micarta inlays... got it in, and yes, it is nicely made, but for what you get, I sold it and got these.. Absolutely love the ZT knives.. and for a little fixed blade, the 0121 is excellent as well. ZT has their act together. Here is a 0301, 0200 and 0350, the 0350 is my EDC.

for bigger jobs the Cold steel Rajah rocks.. definitely gets attention when you whip it out :)

FB, thanks for those pics. I love the matte, tiny grip-lines on the 0350 g-10, just makes you wanna play with it-- really attractive

Peter, wow, youve given me a heck of a lot to think about. I will check all of those suggestions out with some googling tomorrow. I have spent the evening getting to know a lovely bottle of Woods old navy rum, so I don't think now is the moment to start attempting to reprofile my Boss Jack!! :p

Very helpful tips though. I will start on my Necker, because if I mess it up, I won't cry. I will have a go tomorrow and see what I can do.

I know it was a long time ago, but I also appreciated your post when I was asking about Algeria advice -- it would have been very easy for someone with more experience of these kind of escapades to have to have been brutally honest and told me I was a moron for even thinking about it. But instead you were very pragmatic. Appreciated. (I'm now looking at Oman as a more feasible objective)

I live in Warwickshire, near Stratford. Although for the last 3 years I've been studying in London.

Wow. So my TG arrived first thing this morning. First impression was that in the flesh this knife is longer, chunkier and heavier than it looks on the internet. It feels like it was designed primarily with smashing things up in mind!

As a quick comparison to my BJ, one of the first things that hit me was how different the handle feels. The BJ wasn't uncomfortable, but the horizontal/vertical grooves on the TG mag handles feel smoother than the grooves on the BJ. Secondly, the TG arrived a bit sharper than the Boss Jack. The TG will shave my arm hairs with ease, although the obtuse edge angle means that it slices paper in a slightly laboured way. BUT, I didnt buy this to slice paper!! :p

At the moment I really don't mind the cross guard, which seems to be the first issue TG's detractors raise. In fact I actually like guard right now. But i'll be able to give a much better report on the how the guard affects usage in a few weeks when I've had chance to put it through its paces.

This is an outrageously robust knife. For all those who haven't actually held one of these yet, I can't stress enough how tough this seems. I can't imagine a scenario where I could physically break it.

I've been looking for something to fit into that CS Recon Scout/Trailmaster territory only made with INFI (vital). Its an inch and a bit shorter than the trailmaster, and a little longer than the Recon Scout. It's heavier than both of them, with the Trailmaster weighing in at about 16 or 17oz.

I can't honestly say yet whether it will be what I am looking for just yet. I will need to beat on it a bit, and see how it performs. I do have high hopes for it though!

I'll put some pics up later, and then will report back in a few weeks with some beaten pics. How about a little love for the TG!?

Just an initial picture. Sorry about the quality, its taken from my phone.

You'll notice I'm still on the rum... :p

Pics aren't showing :(

Congrats on getting your TG. I can't wait till I get my TGLB to see how it compares weight wise to my CS Trailmaster and my friend's Recon Scout. My Trailmaster feels like a tank at around 16 or so ounces, so it only outweighs the TGLB by about an ounce or 2.
