The M43 is a fine blade for such chores, and really, for many, the blade to go to for bushcraft; that's what I learned from others, older than me , around here.

If your concern is about it embedding in wood, I'd recommend the full-tang AK (Chiruwa AK). I have only an M43, so take my experience w/ a grain of salt (15", 29 oz), and I'm what you'd call a "noob".
