I have been forgetting to post this for a few weeks now. Some friends and I went hiking in Bandera a while back. We were out just doing some night land nav and collecting samples and photos for field biology. We were looking for landmarks that we couldn't find, despite having a map and compass to guide us on our way. Well, we decided to look up at the stars while walking in what the compass alleged was south. I looked up right at the North Star. Apparently, my compass (a product of the pay it forward thread) was oriented 180 deg. out. Glad I found that out in a controlled environment instead of when I needed it.

Well Doug, the stars rule, you are lucky enough to have discovered the problem.

Stay on course my friend.

navigation by stars is one of the things i need to work on (that and plants). looks like it came in handy for you.

maybe what you got is a shouthern hemisphere compass?
that would mean the it points to the south pole instead of the northpole?
And thats why if you go to the southern half of the planet your compass is no good.
