Jerry Busse said:The grooves in the Hell Razor are concave at the bottom and slightly rounded at the high point, like corrugated sheet metal, and therefore act to stiffen the blade while at the same time lightening it and creating less contact friction between the bevel and cutting substrate. The long radiussed grooves do not introduce any major stress risers where as "scoring" a piece of steel introduces a major stress riser due to the angularity at the bottom of the cut.
In the early '80's a lot of makers were producing Rambo styled knives with saw back teeth along the spine. Our testing determined that those with sharp, angular cuts at the bottom of the tooth would consistently crack at the base of one of those angular cuts whereas those with radiussed cuts in the bottom of the saw teeth would distribute the stress over a wider area and showed no consistency to break along that same area. Angular cuts that are put into a knife, including those designed with sharp angles near the tang, prior to heat treat, are subject to micro fissures at the sharp corners of those angles.
As for twisting a Hell Razor until it breaks, the radiussed corrugations will again not introduce any major stress risers that would contribute to a higher incidence of this occurring. Add to that the power of INFI and you can be assured that this will NEVER happen under human induced stress. They always say, "Never say never". . but I'm pretty sure that we are okay here. You'd have to have a really long lever on a pipe wrench with the world's strongest vise coupled buy the strength of two gorillas in order to cause any significant damage.
As an experiment, try milling a radiussed groove in the steel that you normally score and then try breaking it. It will bend much further without breaking than an angular cut of the same depth.
Also, keep in mind the direction of our corrugations. Had we run the grooves from edge to spine, we would have made it much easier to bend by thinning the blade at the bottom of the grooves and giving the displaced steel on the inside of the bend a place to which it could retreat. This would still not introduce any major stress risers due to the radii at the bottom of the groove. In order to have this effect on the Hell Razor, you would need to fold it in half along its length, from the edge to the spine. Even if this were possible, which it is not, without the use of 100 ton presses and V-block dies, the only affect would be that it would bend easier without breaking.
Hope this helps,
