I know this place is the greatest forum on the 'net, and I know the people here are what makes it so. But today I received a knife from our forum brother Fausto. A real Pattadese from his homeland, Sardinia. I was blown away by the simple beauty of this knife. It is a friciton folder like an Opinel, but to compare it to an Opinel is like comparing a cartoon drawing to the Mona Lisa. The craftsmen ship, the lines and design is outstanding. Fausto and I had e-mailed over it, and I had stressed that I wanted a small pocketable version of a real Pattadese. He got me one. The horn handle has a mellow hue to it, with a translucent quality that lets the light through. At 3 1/4 inch, the closed length is just what a Victorinox bantam or Buck cadet is. Very pocketable. The graceful leaf shaped blade is 2 1/2 inches, compared to the peanut 2 1/8 inch.

In hand, it feels lighter than the peanut, and it is. The peanut comes in at just about 2 ounces on the little weight watchers scale I have, while the Sardinian knife is actually about 1 1/2 ounces. Insanely light, like an Opinel. In hand, the horn handle feels almost sensuous in the way it snugs into your grip. The downturn at the handle butt acts like a anchor in back of your ring finger. Very comfortable to use.

Can this knife turn my head from the cult? I don't know, but so far after an hours coon fingering, I am reluctant to let go of it. I'm going to edc this knife, and give periodic updates on it's use. Could this be the new precious?

Fausto, I owe you big time!

Here is the Pattadese with my damascus peanut. It came with a very nice leather case.

Very nice! Gotta admit, of all the various European styles we've seen lately, that's probably the one that speaks to me the loudest.

Very cool! Horn can be a very seductive handle material;)
Very nice lines to those knives.
Congrats Carl, and awesome gesture Fausto!

I agree with Sarah. that's looks to be an absolute beaut of a knife-gifted to one of our greats here-congrats carl, and Fausto is a Fantastic person, I wish the world had more of this sort of guy.

Thanks for sharing, Carl :) This place is full of great gentlemen. Just great people all around here.

That little traditional italian knife is really great looking. And in direct size comparison to the Peanut it seems to be a pretty pocket friendly little fellow.

Great gesture, Fausto!

Wow that horn is beautiful and I really like the blade shape!
Is it carbon steel?

A really wonderful gesture from a really wonderful person! Congrats Carl and big up to you Fausto!

Awesome all the way around!

What I love about Fausto's gift, and especially Carl's picture of the same with his beloved peanut, is how it somehow, suddenly, explains more than Fausto's patient explanations and photographs have up to this point, regarding the knives of his own tradition and the cultural and experiential leaps he makes in using (and even in just thinking about!) the slipjpoints so familiar to us born stateside.

At least, that's the effect this is having on me.

Very good stuff, gentlemen!

Maybe it's not so but the translucence of the horn looks like it may show many different hues depending on the light. That is very elegant.

Oh wow, that is a sweetheart of a knife, congrats Carl and good on you Fausto!

There a few patterns I'd yet like to try, and that Pattadese is definitely one of them.
