I just wanted to take a moment to say Thank You to all the Blade Forum members who made 2009 a fun year for me. You guys are responsible for a lot of pleasant changes for me.

I joined the forum about a year ago when I was contacted by one of the makers who buys handle wood from me. I had made some knives as a hobbyist but nothing to brag about. I was fascinated by all the amazing knives as well as the willingness of the members to share their hard learned knowledge. You guys were always pleasant and always gave patient responses to my ignorant newbe questions. Thank You.

A short time after joining I purchased a dry vacuum/pressure system to begin stabilizing wood. About 50 of the makers on the forum agreed to work with me to help refine my stabilizing process so I could provide stabilized wood that was prepared how you want it to be. This resulted in quite a few changes in the process.

All this while, I had been doing the knife handle wood as a sideline from my regular job. Much on my own time. Where I work we make furniture and carvings from burl and figured woods. We have a couple galleries and a large wood yard where we sell the raw wood. My main job was making gallery pieces with the wood, as well as selling raw wood to furniture makers and guitar builders. When I was able I would cut up wood that I thought would make good knife handles. Some of which I listed here on the forum. You guys taught me a lot.

In just a matter of months you guys changed things where I could no longer just do the knife wood as a sideline but needed to allow a lot more time. I was OK with that because I was having fun. A lot of you posted photos showing what you made with our wood here as well as sending me emails with photos of the awesome knives you made. For me that was a lot of fun.

To make a long story a bit shorter. Because of what you guys have done my boss now allows me to select any wood I want to cut up for handles. Even from his own private stash. If I want something we don't have, he lets me search it out and buy it. If I want to spend most of my time with wood for knife makers, that's ok too.

He used to give me a hard time about being obsessed with custom knives. Now he brags about me supplying the wood to some of the very best knifemakers (you guys). In the coming year I will focus on providing the best burl and figured woods I can find and list them here on the forum. I will be rebuilding my webstore to provide batches for teachers, beginners and production runs. But you guys will always get to see the very best stuff here first.

Enough of my rambling. Thank You BF members.

Thanks for the kind words. This year I am going to be on a mission to find some of the most bizarre wood any of us have ever seen. My boss has been in the burl biz since the 70s so he has some real good connections with the other old timers. Time to start digging through their personal stashes as well.

Hey Mark,

I don't know man. You're the kind of guy we tell the kids to stay away from. You know, the guy giving away free samples outside the fence at the school yard. You get us hooked and then we have to keep coming back for more. As our addiction intensifies we need to get more and more better stuff all the time...and of course, you got the goods!

Hallelujah brother. I've enjoyed our cyber-association!

All the best of the holy days, Phil

I always enjoy seeing all the great wood that you put up for sale. It keeps me checking out the for sale section about a hundred times a day.

Funny , I use to drive by Marks store twice a month when I lived in Crescent City , Ca. I never stopped , it was just another tourist trap , so I thought . I almost miss living there now , almost .

Mark, its been great dealing and emailing with you the last year. I'm very glad you showed up on the forum.

You know, you should be an example in some business school for really great internet social marketing :) Honest, generous, personable (at least on the net). Make friends first, then offer them the chance to get great drugs, err, wood. Lots of people try this. Few succeed.

Congratulations and keep it up :D

I agree with you guys, you can get hooked on this stuff. I know I am.
A while back I upgraded my membership. Now it says dealer under my user name.
I am not sure if that is because of the upgraded membership, or because Nick Wheeler called me a dirty rotten wood dealer, preying upon the weaknesses of poor knife makers like himself.

I seem to get a thrill out of finding really unusual woods. First I want to keep it for myself, then after a while I want to show it to you guys. I have a lot of fun working with the wood, but probably just as much fun seeing what you guys are able to do with it. I will keep looking for the highly unusual woods and sharing them here as long as you guys keep the photos coming.

You just have to sell some of those knives you are making instead of keeping them all.
I've seen what you can do. You make great knives.

Mark,
Thank you for for all you have done for us makers. As a marketing ploy I am considering a free blade with the purchase of each custom shaped Burl Source handle.

Hey Los Angeles,
I know you make cool stuff. So when do we get to see some photos?

When I get off my rear end, I guess.

Thing is, knife making is not my main hobby, but more a sub-set of my life as an artist in general. What that means is I'm using a lot of the wood you've sold me to make things other than knives. Anyway, I haven't really felt that this community would be all that interested in what I've made in terms of jewelry and sculptural objects, which occupies the lion's share of my 3-D portfolio. Plus, I suppose I don't really know where to put it around here without disrupting the balance.

Maybe in some kind of "other" category?
