It's been just over a year since I started grinding a bar of Aldo's 1095 on my HF 1x30 in my garage. I've learned so much here from such a fantastic group of people that I just wanted to say thank you to all who take the time to comment, encourage and answer questions.
Thank you to Spark and all of the mods that keep this place running.
Stacy and Count, thanks for always being helpful, especially to the new guys.
Eric Lucy, thanks for having crazy ideas like me and for your generosity.
Nick Wheeler, your videos should go in the knifemaker's vault for future generations to learn from...especially hand sanding!
John Lloyd, thank you for giving up so much of your time for me and for being so generous.
To the many others, a sincere thank you for giving so much of your time and knowledge.

I think it is very fitting to show this nearly finished knife (my 10th I think) as a culmination of my year experience here. This is the first knife that I've done everything, including the heat treat, myself. 100% knowledge from right here.

This is your first knife? it looks great, very good job!

Pablo

Really nice work. Congrats!

If thats your first knife, its the cleanest job of a 1st I've ever seen. Nice job. Find a local guild or club. It has helped a LOT to learn from great makers in person.

Looks great! I would also like to thank all the makers, mods and such. Although, I haven't made any knives yet, I do plan to and have been reading, watching and learning as much as I can for a few years now. So, thanks to all contributors.
And that knife looks great even if it is number ten!

Good job buddy.. I would love to show you my first one.

I think with a lot of guys myself included we rush through our first attempts just to get to see if it measures up. Usually not. So when we slow down and do each step to completion we would end up with a lot nicer first effort.

Keep up the good work

Thank you for the mention, I really appreciate that! :)

Very good looking knife... great design and super clean construction.

Since I actually read your OP ;) :p... This is the first one that was 100% your handiwork... do you have a pic of the first effort from a year ago?

And thank you for taking it to heart that a super clean "low grit" finish looks better than a high grit crappy finish. :D

Your thanks is appreciated......but the photo of that knife make me feel even better.

:D Yes! This is 600

Your thanks is appreciated......but the photo of that knife make me feel even better.

That looks great
It gives me joy to see that at least someone is paying attention.

I have definitely found the value in the stickies and The Count's standard reply. I go through them all the time.

Find a local guild or club. It has helped a LOT to learn from great makers in person.

There is only one collecting club in St. Louis that I'm aware of and I've only been to one other maker's shop before. Hopefully I can meet some more local makers. I hope to be able to purchase or at least get the chance to use a real grinder someday.

You accomplished that on the small HF belt/disc sander? That is a beautiful knife - good job.

Your tenth is fantastic but your first ain't no slouch either. Very nice. It's a pay it forward deal. As you learn more you start answering more and more questions and start asking fewer and fewer questions. Although you never stop asking. You take what you learn and pass it on to those who come up behind you. But you're right, these guys and gals are the best.

Take a look in my "Backtracking a bit" thread in the Custom and Handmade section to see what you guys helped me build.

Thank you, I try to pay it forward where I can and encourage other makers.
And I have seen that beautiful bowie. Wow!

That is definitely a knife that is funtionable, good looking proportionally, and well finished too. I've learned virtually everything that I know about knife making from this site, over slow and steady time. I agree that it's a great resource if you stay with it.
