Thank You So Much But...

I play a little bit. Have a few bad ass custom cues. My playing cue is worth a bit over $4,000.......I have been gifted about 5 of the Budweiser cues. Cost??? Bout $10. What are they good for??? Kindling maybe??

NO Joe! They are good for when somebody wants to borrow a pool cue from you... Here you go, buddy... keep it!

I give a buttload of knives away... in part so some folks have their own knife and don't need to borrow mine.

If a Budweiser cue keeps some ogre like me from bashing the hell out of your cue, then it's worth about 4 grand. :D

Tell them you don't collect knives anymore, you collect firearms and vintage sports cars and see what ya get...

Honesty is the best policy. Just be polite.

Hello Everyone,

I have been trying to scale back on how many knives I own and how many I plan to purchase over the next couple of years. My goal is to have a smaller but, better collection.

Any upcoming purchases have to fill a void in my collection or replace what I already have. All replacements will be measured against what I own, with performance, ergonomics, and price in mind. At least that is the idea. Right now, I am pretty happy with what I own so I don't expect too many upgrades.

But, here is my problem. Because all my friends know that I am a gun and knife guy, they keep giving me knives as gifts. Some of the knives are even halfway decent but, very few are anything I would be willing to carry. How do I say "Thank you, but, no thank you," without insulting my friends and destroying friendships? The same problem holds true for extended family. I don't need any more low budget, foreign-made paperweights.
You just say "Thank You". Get a nice shadow box and store/display them. If they ask why you don't carry them, tell them that you lose knives occasionally and don't want to risk losing a gifted knife and that they see light use around the house.

Speak to the sentimentality, and show that you are appreciative that they thought of you at all. Use the knives as a reminder of them, as they were a reminder of you to them as well.

For family I would outright tell them you don't really need any more knives, tell them your new hobby is pants.
You can never have too many pairs of pants.
Socks too, those damn gnomes are always stealing them from the dryer and it's good to have as many pairs as you've got room for :D

When a friend gives you a knife as a gift, I would tell them you really appreciate the gift but you've got too many knives and you wouldn't feel right taking another that could go to someone who may need it more than you.
That's what I would do anyways.
I don't have the gift problem that Sabre Cat has. Folks just don't give me knives. Fact is they don't give me much of anything other than grief. ;) I like the concept of mentioning that you might gift their knife to someone who is more deserving of a new knife. That pretty much stops the knife gift receiving as they know you don't really want the blade that they are willing to give as a gift.

Pants.... Oh yes, you can have too many. Trust me. I know. Socks.... I probably have 50 pairs still in their packaging that I never got around to opening. The thing is that I change over time and with socks I have been buying what I believe to be a higher end sock because I can tell the difference unlike many. Underware... same deal. I don't have a problem with knives, but the pile keeps growing and I am certainly not using them up.

LOL. I get grief too. More from family than friends.

This morning, my wife and I were discussing what to do with one of my excess knives. She suggested disassembly of the knife and disposing of it in the trash. I don't feel it is safe to use because of very poor construction.

What would you do?

I'd bet that many of us "Gun 'n Knife" guys are in that exact same gift predicament as the OP. But personally, if ssomeone goes out of their way to buy a gift for me, I don't care if it's a $3.87 Wally special....I appreciate the gift. But if it means that much to get what you want, there is a workaround.

Most of the store gift registries do not require specific events like weddings to use. Find a larger retailer that has the knives you'd like, and set up an account. Tag a few of your next couple of grail knives. Then print up some cards with your registry number on them and pass out to your friends and family circle. In the beginning it'll be a novelty and bring some good laughs. But after a few people actually go look into it, they will see that there are in fact knives similar to your current collection, and a few people will actually take you seriously. No one has to pay in full for that $700 knife, but simply contribute towards it on your store credit account.

Ultimately what will start out as a funny group conversation ice breaker, may just become the solution to your pet peeve. :D.

When people inquire as to if they can get me a knife as a gift I inform them I only collect CRK... which is not true, but I have never received one as a gift so it's a win either way: I won't get crap, and maybe one day I'll get a Sebenza or something.

I'm on my 3rd gifted Gerber Suspension MT. It's like a pair of cheap sunglasses, i can sit on them, run them over, throw them off a balcony, and there they are. Ready for use, by somebody that doesn't want to use it.

I usually gift that kind of stuff, rather it's clothes or any other kind of gift. Or throw it in as a freebie in my sale threads as an incentive. I try to always use/wear it when around the person the next time im around them, just to let them know it's appreciated.
I also do this with knives i bought that don't hold a value worth reselling.

Tell them to buy you ammo.

When I throw out a knife I generally give it a few wraps of duct tape, wrap it in a bit of cardboard and duct tape again.

I don’t want my garbage man to get stabbed, but I haven’t disassembled a knife I threw out to this point.
