I got the two replacement knives for the broken Chiruwa and I'm very happy. It looks like these two knives are polished better than the Chiruwa. It really looks like you went out of your way. I know that the 18in AKs usually have a wood handle but the one I received has a horn handle as requested. I'll give you guys a field report on them tomorrow when me and my brother get to try them. I really appreciate all of this and I will be a repeate customer (when I have some more money that is). While I'm posting, who's initials are S.B. and L.B.? SB has a rising sun and LB has a crescent moon. Thanks again Bill.

I believe SB is Sher (Bahadur) and LB is Lal Bahadur, which is Bura's actual name (Bura means 'old (man)', though say it with the 'r' in the middle of the palate or it means 'bad' ;) - at least in Hindi)

Well, the 18in WW2 and AK are living up to expectations. Chopped some 2x4s up and cut an old skateboard in half. The skateboard was made from six layers of compressed oak, it didn't stand a chance. The most important test was hitting the tree that broke the last knife. Again, no problems at all. I do have one question though. The karda is being scratched by two tacks because the little piece of leather that should be over them isn't there. What should I do to cover the tacks and what should I do to polish the slight scratches out of the karda's horn handle?

I lost one of those pieces of leather on the sheath too. It's possible that it fell inside the sheath. Get a flashlight and look inside. It might still be in there. Otherwise you can probably find or cut a piece of leather and glue it to the same spot.

For the scratched tools, I use one chakma for all the knives. It's going to get scratched no matter what I do. The rest I leave unused. :o

That has happened on all my sheaths, super glue works well !!

No repeat troubles !!

Brendan

The piece of leather was in there so I glued it in place, hopefully it stays. I wetsanded the scratch out of the karda's handle with 1500 sandpaper. The scratch is gone but that side has lost its luster now. Do the horn handles have some sort of finish or do I just need to find something to polish it with? I have some compounds for buffing cars, I'll probably try some of them out.

Skeletor - send me an email: I have something for you.

Here's the full batch for future reference:

By the way...I'm back to doing avatars again...

(no contest, though - always makes me get sick.. )

So does anyone have any ideas about the horn handle? Would a super fine sandpaper or compound work or is there something that you guys know of for polishing? Thanks for the cool avatars Pendentive.

Polishing rogue and a buffing wheel? I assume that's what the kami's use cuz it's on all my horn handles.

I've never tried it though but going to finer and finer sandpapers then the finer and fancier papers that some people use to sharpen knives might work.

My local Home Despot only has 600 grit as the finest stuff. There's finer stuff out there.

Maybe beside the Bondini at Walmart. :D

Is that polishing rouge the red stuff in the handle's rings? What's it like? A liquid that I just buff on?

The red-rouge works on horn. Like all stuff its easier and you get a better shine if you sand it to a high grit before buffing. I found though that turtle wax makes a buffing compound that just puts on a smoother shine than the red-rouge. Doesnt bite as agressive though, but its a great final buff, to get that mirror shine in the horn. Just be careful not to burn the horn when buffing. Gentle strokes and lots of movement.

Ok, I'll probably go with the turtle wax just because I probably have some out in the garage. I need to check after school.

Whoops need to make it clear that Im using a buffing bit on a dremel when buffing. Basically a miniature high speed buffer. Dont really know any way to do the buffing thing by hand except for pure elbow grease and much time. Also the turtle wax product is the turtle wax buffing compound, and not the turtle wax wax.
