So, Some time around June or July last year .I posted a question on this forum about what knife to bring on the John Muir trail . I was hoping for you all to suggest ka-bars , bowie knives, and other macho knives . To my dismay the majority of you suggested a SAK with saw. I pick one up , The victorinox camper . but I stubbornly brought a Benchmade 710 and a gerber camp knife along too. Needless to say after a few days on the trail I wanted to get rid of some excess weight . We got such a chance and the gerber , and benchmade were left behind along with some other gear. At any rate the point I'm getting at is that the SAK was everything and more for day to day needs .it preformed amazingly and it is now one of my favorite knives . So, I just had to come back to this forum and say thanks to those who gave me the great advice.since I am not a gold member I can't access the old thread and thank you guys by name , but I'm hoping some of you find this new thread. I also wanted to post some photos for ya'll to see. Thanks again.:D

This is from your first Day on the trail.

Here I am just before hitting the top of Selden pass. Elevation 10,900 ft

Hilarious photo of your bud and great photos of the Sierra. Like many of the old timers, we often learn that the right tool for the jobs presented is not always the one we may have first thought.

I've used SAKs and little folders FAR more often than the fixed blades I always carry anyway.

Nothing in this thread is Off-Topic! :D
Great trip from the looks of the photos, thanks!

larger fixed blade knives are good for making a camp and chopping wood, in the areas where we leave no trace, there is not much use for them, i carry a one handed treker and it is a lot of knife for the weight. if i am hunting large game, i like a fixed blade for processing the kill, but for camp i mostly dont need much knife. the SAK or A MULTITOOL will handle 99 % of what i need.

i am glad that you found the information provided here of use.

Nice! I've always wanted to do the John Muir Trail, seeing your pics makes me want to do it even more  Hope you get to go back this summer.

Great picts.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
I think many of us would have to initial inclination to carry a fixed blade.
