A while back there was some major discussion on here about why more established makers don't post here more often. One of the main reasons cited was that they tire of answering the same questions over and over without any thanks for their contribution.

I have been thinking to myself that maybe one of the most rewarding things for a teacher is when one of their students is sucessful. In the case of knife makers this would be when a newbie finally makes a decent knife. So I wanted to post the folowing pictures as my way of saying thanks to those veteran makers who regularly help out us new guys around here. Many times you may not even be aware that you are helping someone, as so much of what I've learned on here is just from lurking and reading many of your WIP's and the answers that you give to other makers.

Anyway here's the knife.

This is the fifth knife that i have made since starting just over a year ago. I work fairly slow as I don't own a grinder yet, so all work to date has been done with files and snadpaper. I do find an 8" bench grinder somewhat useful in hogging off metal for the rough profile, and I do have a Chinese table top drill press that I use for drilling holes in the tang and scales.

This blade is made form a piece of 1080 that my brother-in-law gave me for Christmas. It started as a bar 12"x1.5"x.250", which is much thicker than any stock that I had worked with previously. Overall finished lenght is 11.75" and the blade measures 6.75. The handle is green canvas micarta with black G-10 liners and brass Corby's.

Finally I need to publicly thank Darrin Sanders for helping with the Heat Treat of this blade(it was too big to fit in my two-brick forge). He went out of his way to help with both words of wisdom and encouragment on this project.

Feel free to comment in any way, but the intent of this post is to thank those that have helped me in my knife making education.

Cheers,

Jeff

Very nice! I see that you spent a good deal of time with your finishing work, it really shows! Everything is crisp and even and you're handle contours are spot on (in my opinion).

I must say that when I saw Jeff's blade I was impressed. Now that it is finished I am even more impressed. I will be saving these pics as proof of what can be done with files and sandpaper. Well done Jeff, now go make another one! :D

Iwannashoot,

I think you did a great job on that knife. It has nice lines and what appears to be excellent fit-and-finish. IMO it looks much better than some of the knives that are listed on the first page of the fixed blades for sale page right now. Congratulations.

Adam

That's a great sentiment and a very nice knife. I salute you! Classy
