Not sure what the material is. Yes, it takes a little of the dye but not as well as the micarta. It is held on by some sort of adhesive and I suppose you could take it off and re-glue them if you wanted. I just noticed that after about 15 mins. in simmering hot water, they looked like they were about ready to seperate from the handles and they did swell a bit. They shrunk back down to size after drying.
