That knife that's ignored

Since my obsession with blades and knives has kicked in, I'm always on the interweb or window shopping for knives. There's always been one knife in particular, the Kershaw Blurr, that caught my eye as I scrolled but, for all intents and purposes, I mostly ignored for one reason or the other until it became a second nature to just overlook it without really doing so, make sense? Now the other day I was-a-moseying through Walmart with my wee one (we were giving mommy a break) and, as is very common for me to do when left to my own devices in a store with a blade display, found myself heading toward the hunting/outdoorsy section. As I perused the knife display I decided for the heck of it to check out th Blurr. After holding it and toying around with it for about ten minutes, I can't understand why I never thought to give this particular blade the chance. Everything from the action to the ergonomics and the blade length and shape were perfect. I can say it will me my next buy for sure.

Has anyone else had a similar experience like this, just overlooking a knife even though it's right in front of your face and then falling in love with it once you try it?

Yes. Oddly enough, the venerable Swiss Army Knife was the knife I ignored for many years. I had one when I was around 12 or so. I wasn't really into pocket knives that much at the time and I have no idea what became of it. I only recently (40+ years later) got interested in pocket knives but still the SAK was not on my radar.

It wasn't until I needed to take a business trip a few years ago when I decided I wanted to carry something with me that was both easily replaceable and would provide a few extra tools, that I bought a Victorinox SAK (alox Electrician). Having that as my only pocket tool for a couple of weeks on the road gave me a new appreciation for them, and the alox scales added that little extra visual and tactile appeal over the standard red-plastic version.

Since then, an alox SAK of some type or another has always been in my pocket. Plus one in my briefcase, in my car, hanging from a hook in the kitchen, and now my wife carries and uses one regularly.

For me it was the Spydie GB1.
I was looking for something on the small side to give my Rookie G10 a break after carrying it almost exclusively for about 3-4 years. At the time, $100-110 was my limit on folders. I had seen a few pics of the GB1 and the shape kind of spoke to me but at $150 it was too rich for my blood. Never really looked into it.

I decided to start google and BF researching (before I joined) and was typing things like, "best Spyderco for the money" "best value Spydie" etc, hoping someone would suggest a few smaller blades for me to research. It seemed like every article I read mentioned the GB1 as one of or the best Spydie for the money.

So I temporarily dropped the small blade search and checked out the GB more thoroughly on YouTube. TAP, jdavis882 and nuts4knives sealed the deal so I ordered one.......and the love affair began

For me, it's the folder thing most of you guys on this forum love.

Don't get me wrong, I've always appreciated fixed blades, love em. I've even carried an SAK for years, but always poo-pooed the tiny folders otherwise, bleah, limited utility, might as well just use my SAK... Then this year I took a more serious look at folders and hey, wow, they have a better cutting edge geometry and more blade than my SAK, and lock more reassuringly (my SAK is >30 years old, no frame or liner lock). They are also more "tacticool" than SAKs, but that is a dubious virtue.

So yeah, I discovered you guys!

Bad influence!

But as of now my folder count, SAK not withstanding is but three. 2 Kershaw emersons (6k, 4KXL) and a cheap beater 2 1/2 inch "elk ridge" folder with bright friendly colours - even that has more belly than my SAK, and while the mystery steel edge retention isn't great, it sharpens easy and (I think) doesn't scare people because of its size and bright colours.

I now feel the urge to go look at a pm2.

Is this illnes curable or will I eventually end up with as many folders as Bowie knives?

There are two that ive been ignoring... The spyderco delica/endura and the kershaw leek... I know ill get the CF leek when it gets here in canada but the delica/endura.... Itll happen soon™

Spykez, i think the only cure is to live under a rock for a few years. But even that can backfire. So short answer, no. You're doomed :p

Ps: the pm2 is awesome

All the knives you mentioned are excellent. You really should go ahead and bit the bullet.

It's on it's way :p

My wife can't understand it yet. Look, in fairness she is great about most of my vices. But she doesn't get the small folder thing, "You bought something that small and it costs as much as a miyabi?"

For me, it is the Spyderco C36TIFP Ti-Mil Military.

Have been looking at it every week or so (seems like forever), probably more for the bling factor than the fact that I actually "need" it for an EDC.

I have no Spydies, only because I hesitate to carry a knife that (to me) appears like a bird looking back at me. Weird.

I've held a few Spyderco knives in the past couple years and they're comfy in hand, solid built, and the "Spyderhole" is interesting but I just cannot get past the blade shape. I played with the Tenacious at the Walmart when I checked out the Blur, at 8cr13mov steel and a reasonable price I think I could try it out to see if I could deal with the shape. I guess you could say I the same thing happened twice that day :)

Now that you got me thinking about it I realize I overlook Bokers,Kershaws,Crkt. I see the low price of them and just ignore them. Need to stop doing that and just handle them a bit I suppose.

Same here once I started buying higher end brands I stopped even looking at cheaper models , one knife in particular is the skyline

The full size Griptillian.
The thicker handle with the diamond texture caught my eye. I thought : I would probably like that; the handle looks like it was designed for use rather than like so many that are either designed to look BA and Tactical and really just limit how you can grip it . . . or are first and for most designed thin so it will sit in one's pocket and not cause trouble but in use it feels kind of lacking and like the handle is an after thought with all the focus on the blade steel and BA blade shape.

Then I heard negative things : handle too thick (in the pocket), plasticy and cheep feeling . . .
and I thought the axis lock was going go be a bit tough to work along the lines of the ball locks and after all it has TWO springs so it must be hard to work (I didn't believe that for long but by then was already looking at other things).

So yah . . .
out of the corner of my eye there goes another Griptillian but OOOHHHHH look over here ! ! ! There's another knife . . . blah, blah, blah . . .

Then one day I got so obsessed with the handle I decided to "put up with" the down sides.
AND
thank you very much some one pointed out the Ritter in M390 and I thought what the heck may as well get that one . . . has the "Ritter" buzz word.

BoyOhBoyOhBoyOBoOBoBo

Totally LOVE THIS THING.
This knife WORKS ! (handle, blade grind, axis lock . . . M390 by Ritter specs I can't say enough good about just that) . . .GREAT USER.
I'm a Happy Dog !

I am guilty of this also. I'm a bit of a steel junkie and generally they cost more. I have had various RAT 1's and 2's and they are great bargains. I also have a few SAKs lying around that I take with me if I travel.

The Blur was my first knife, and sort of fell towards the wayside as I bought more expensive and more popular knives like the 940, a Delica, some Emersons, and most recently a Hinderer. I just started using/carrying the Blur again and I've got to say that it still remains a phenomenal knife IMO. If I could get rid of the serrations then it would be a perfect EDC.

I've handled the Kershaw Blur and just didn't really like the feel of it in my hand. The inserts felt good but it's slim yet wide in my hand...hot spot crazy to me.You could pick out something more comfortable and much cheaper in a bargain-bin pile of MTech Knives. The Kershaw Blur was nothing special.Just a propagandized to be 'the knife to get and pay more for' just like the Skyline,SOG Flash, the Benchmade 940...all pushed by a fast talking YouTube reviewer with little knowledge of cutlery...and people ate up his words and bought them. Most likely this YouTube reviewer is a person who just got into knives altogether:jerkit:

For several years in my knife obsession I bought many high end folders (Spyderco, Benchmade, CRK, Hinderer, etc.) but never a Zero Tolerance. It wasn't until early last year that I got my first one (a 0350). While they don't quite call my name like Spyderco and CRK knives do there are a few models that are amazing and wish I discovered earlier (0220, 0452, 0095, 0450).
Side Note, Kershaw Blur is a sweet knife but it is one of the only knives to ever open in my pocket by accident, i'm sure it was a freak thing but I lost some trust in it after that.

I ignored the delica for a long time. Then I got one and loved it. Then I gave it to my brother. Now I want another one.

I had to look at the Blur.

Found this. Caveat emptor.

OTOH, my PM2 came today. It's glorious! FFG, I'm going to really enjoy it!

Exact same thing is happening to me with the buck 110 always wanted it and still do but I can't seem to pull the trigger on one.
