That look when you tell someone you spent more than $50+ on a knife....

Does anyone else get that look as if you are out of your mind for spending so much on a knife? I just told my old man that I just bought a knife for $140, and his eyes were kind of like . "What did you do that for?" I laugh every time I get that reaction, he went and got his old Buck 422 USA, which is like 1990s, and tried telling me that it was just as good. Which was really quality for its time, but still no comparison to the paramilitary 2 dlc/camo I just got. Does anyone else get that response pretty often?
EDIT: for reference this is the same kind of 422 he tried telling me was better

I've come so far as to lie about how much I spent. Whenever my girlfriend or friends see I have a new knife the first question out of their mouth is, "How much was it?" My default answer is always $200 when I actually spent $1500.

That's how you know you're deep into the knife obsession when you tell your girlfriend that it was "only" $200 and she says nonchalantly, "oh, ok".

Ouch, what was the $1500 knife anyways?

I personally don't tell others what I spend on my kit. Until the day comes someone else is paying, it's not their concern:)

It,s just whatever you are into that makes it worth the price, my Father in law thinks I,m totally insane because I,m thinking of buying Another Randall made for a little over six hundred,
Yet he thinks it was money well spent building his Gaming computer at a cost of $4600.00 + new games.
If you like something and can afford it who cares what anyone Else Thinks.

Now a $4600 gaming computer seems useless to me, so I guess its all point of view

My close friends would be surprised if I carried anything under the $500 range. My family is well aware that my edc cost $1200. I don't lie as a rule. And I could care less what people think of my spending habits.

You should buy what you want if you earned the money and do not have any other obligations or debts. But, being a father and knowing the value of hard work and a dollar, I can see your dad's point.

My dad wore kmart jeans back in the 80s and we would tease him and he said they were just as good as designer jeans. Now, as a father, I have learned that he bought those kmart jeans and endured the teasing so that my sister could have dance lessons and I could buy my fancy BMX bike.

Don't be so hard on your dad - you will know what he means one day...

me telling them I spent $60 for a nice isnt as bad when I tell them I spend $250 on a fishing rod or $500 on a Snap on socket

Almost everyone I know has a hobby or interest that, for people who aren't into it, costs silly amounts of money. I don't really understand designer clothes, expensive shoes or high-end handbags, but the look I get from people who ask about what my knives cost helps keep me from judging too harshly.

I am by far and away the poorest amongst my friends. Yet their eyes bug out when I tell them I spent over $100 on a pocket knife. Mind you, some of these guys consider their $2000 TAG Heuer a "beater" watch.

Everyone has stuff that they will spend money on and it will be different from person to person.

What gets me are the ones driving $60K + cars (and more than one, the wife has one too), get their kid a $40K car to drive to High School, living in $400K plus houses, 10K watches, and every latest gadget you can think of that say something about a $100 knife.....

I share the same sentiments with many of you on this thread. I just tell them its a hobby and the main sticking point is, ALL OF THEM HAVE GOOD RESALE VALUE so Im not really mindlessly blowing my dough.

I think it's more absurd that you spent $140 on a Paramilitary 2. You know you can find them for less than $100 right?
