That one knife......

That's the way life is. You look for some material object that will make you fulfilled. Until you realize your happiness doesn't come from a car, knife, gun whatever you're going to go right on with the quest. I used to buy a lot of new knives that came out, until I looked around and thought just why do I need another knife? These days I'm much more measured in buying and I might add a lot more content with what I have in all things.

I had owned many Sebenzas during my search. I put together all this criteria of size, weight ,Thicknesses, style ect that I would want in a knife. One day the bulb lit and I realized it was a Sebenza I was describing, I was just too dumb to know it before.

Closest I've come is a Benchmade Anthem, and even that isn't my idea of perfection... it's damn close though. Got it anodized, swapped out the bearings for PB washers, deep carry clip and it gets more pocket time than anything else I own. If it came from the factory like that, and with some internal milling to lighten it up (pretty tough on an integral), and a slightly thinner blade I think it would be pretty much perfect.

That was how I came to the idea of making my own.

It's not a way to solve any problems, really. But it does distract you with a whole new list of other problems.

Instead of looking at knives, you spend your time looking at milling machines, belt grinders, fantasizing about Tormach products, comparing the prices of Micarta slabs, and comparing hardness vs toughness of various steels.

But hey. At least I don't think about the "perfect" knife so much.....

My Shiro F3 is all the folder I'll likely ever need. Why I keep buying others I will never adequately be able to explain. Hell, everything except an SAK is illegal in NYC.

That all sounds so familiar...

One does not exist, so no reason to fight it. Have a collection instead.

Or commission a custom piece and make your idea a reality.

Ever found yourself searching for that one knife? The one you can see in your head but can never find in reality. It's like an itch that you can never scratch.

Yep. Time to save some loot and get a true custom maker to build it for you.

Either that or learn to make it yourself.

So far waiting for someone to have a stroke a genius and build the perfect knife as I envision it hasn’t worked out.

The "collection" idea is fine. The custom design is NOT, in my view.
Also, almost in my view, is my checkbook. It shrivels when it sees me looking at it.
I have custom designed two titanium framelock folders and one fixed blade.
I am a LOUSY designer. Although the makers did just as I asked, and dimensions were perfect, none of the knives felt decent in my hand.
I sold all of them quickly for maxi-loss.
LESSON LEARNED? ...back to a large Sebbie. Beats anything I've owned, IMO.

I may not be done buying forever, but my urge to buy disappeared after the Keen. I found myself not making buys that I had planned on making, and even gave a knife away.

I don't have a "one knife" because so many knives are awesome for different reasons. That said, I HAVE drastically cut back, much preferring to go with quality over quantity these days.

Yeah, my purchasing is definitely turning into more expensive splurges. Last week I received a knife that is definitely in the “one knife” type category. This week for some reason I bought a Shaman.

It arrives tomorrow! :D

You also must consider the fact that you yourself change all the time.
You are not the same man you were 10 years ago, or even 2 years ago.
And your wants and desires change with you.
