That one knife......

I currently have four custom knives on order. Two are the maker's designs with no modifications, only scale material choice. Two more are in the style of the maker but have mods specified by me. All are fixed blades.

If I didn't have the wherewithal, I could do quite well for the rest of my life with my One Bear Shirogorov F3.

I’m awaiting a more modest order of one custom Kephart and a higher end production folder. I hear you man.

nah - i carried the same knife as my EDC for over 10 years - had it not broken, I'd still be carrying it - and probably would have never ended up here.
this place is the problem, lol ;)

I purchased 2 more knives after that looking for a replacement, I liked both, but this place had me looking for better.
I ended up with a spyderco domino and don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'll likely replace other knives at some point, and I buy when something catches my interest, but its not really looking for 'the one'

I have spent an altogether distressing amount of time going through countless pages of online catalogs and eBay listings looking for a knife that met very specific parameters, only to have nothing come of it.

The recent influx of high-end chinese knives has already made the process better, as the design variety of decently-made knives has gone up significantly.

The Domino would be on my short list for answering the “if you could only have one” mental exercise. Hell of a knife.

It seems easier to be captivated by one elusive blade, rather than my current state of being captivated by too many...

Trust me when I say each order began as an inquiry but every one was so accommodating I just couldn't refuse. What can I say? I'm weak.

It's time to sell some inventory. Soon.

There is no single knife that meets all of my needs/interests. That's why I now own over 170, going on 180. ;)

The one you can see in your head
Well as I always say everybody ought to be given a Swiss Army Knife and a TIG welder at birth if they are going to have any hope of making it in this world.
I might have a different perspective than some. :)

Yes I was using my Mini Champ SAK the other day to refine the custom scales on my Grail.

So, for the most part I see it in my head and go to my shop and make it or mod it.

It is true though that what is in my head sure isn't sitting out there on a shelf to buy.

I have "several" knives. This one is about as close as I've come to "that one knife", but it hasn't stopped my search :

Searching for the perfect knife is how I ended up with a cabinet full of knives. I don’t have any regrets about it really, it was fun and I learned a lot.
These days tho my knife buying has slowed way down. The reason is a combination of two things I believe. First coming to appreciate all the really great knives I have and just enjoying carrying and using them. And second being honest about my daily needs and requirements and not choosing knives based on the fantasy me that lives in my imagination.

I'm pretty new to the folder game but after handling the Richard Rogers Slim Utility at NYCKS I realized that is EXACTLY what I want in a knife. The feel, the action, the weight, oh god it was just perfect.
Unfortunately I didn't win the lottery so I'll have to wait until I see one up for sale online somewhere...

I long ago came to the realization that there is no one 'perfect' knife for me, so I stopped looking for it. I carry and use a fairly small number of knives in my rotation:
1) My Victorinox Executive (always).
2) My Victorinox Spartan (or Pioneer) {always one or the other}.
3) Whichever one-handed folder I choose for the day; either a Spyderco or a CRK. Which one depends on how I feel or what uses I might have. Lately, mostly my leaf-bladed Caribbean.

The 3 knives I carry complement each other and cover pretty much anything I need a knife for on a daily basis.

Many years ago, I used to buy one knife a month, sometimes two. Always looking for 'The One'. Well, 'The One' never came along. And I realized I rarely enjoyed many of the knives, because I rarely took the time with many of them before moving on to search again. Yet some few just feel right and cover what I like and/or need. So now I still occasionally buy, but only very rarely at all. And I get FAR more use and enjoyment out of those few knives in my small and 'exclusive' EDC category. Speaking for myself, that brings with it a sense of freedom from the need to compulsively purchase knives.

I may not be done buying forever, but my urge to buy disappeared after the Keen. I found myself not making buys that I had planned on making, and even gave a knife away.

This is exactly the way I feel about the Spyderco Kapara. It’s not a perfect knife but it’s made me forget anticipated purchases and will probably lead to selling a few that were once favorites.

I used to look for "the one", but that itch is never really scratched except temporarily. Don't worry or even think about that any more in terms of choosing a knife. I have my comfortable size that I like and seldom deviate from that.

Ever found yourself searching for that one knife? The one you can see in your head but can never find in reality. It's like an itch that you can never scratch.
Someone on BFC had a sig line once that read, "We're not buying new knives, we're buying new emotions."

Seems right to me.
