although i have made a few knives before i always had help with the bevel grinding and heat treating. I have been working on my first knives that are 100% me. I am using a jig to "grind" the bevels (gough) and this weekend fired up my heat treat forge with homemade propane burner and fire bricks. everything went quite smoothly and it was a lot of fun to see that steel get red! A big thank you to everyone on this site!

Did you happen to get those bricks at Menards? Looks to be the same ones I have. Only thing different is I broke a brick in half, and used those 2 as the walls leaving maybe a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2" opening. The steel gets hot quick that way! And If I ever want to do a very large blade I can reorganize the bricks however I feel. Looks like its working well for you though!

Awesome! Theyre nice bricks. I paid $9 for the package of I believe 8 bricks. No cracks or anything. I have about 23 blades treated in them.
