The “Boy’s Knife”

i should of got stitches.but injuries and boys happened frequently.
Ha! I have a few "I should have gotten stitches" stories too. I think they mostly involve frightened dogs and rusty nails.

Back to knives, I think one of my first knives (actually it might have been the first) was a small lockback I got for Christmas when I was 11 or 12. I used it all the time for a few decades. Until about the time I started thinking about a knife for my kids. Even a fancy SAK with a saw and toothpick and everything didn't kick it out of my pocket. I eventually lost the SAK, but still have the small lockback. It's gotten a little smaller...

I had an old scout type knife too, but I only really ever used the blade, not the other tools… so a standard boys knife would have probably suited me better. If I wanted to open a can there was always a real can opener around somewhere, and the awl had such a strong pull, I could only get it open once in a great while.

Back in 2021, a close friend was downsizing (and I mean "DOWNSIZING") for an out of state move. While doing so, he gifted some knives to me. Among the knives he gave to me was this I.K CO. Boy's knife. Used, but not abused, this is quite a nice little knife. It has some light discoloration on the blade, but the rest of the knife is clean and clear. It has been resting peacefully in the knife roll since. I've decided recently to try to clean the blade up a bit, without removing the patina of course.

I'm now searching for any information on this knife that I might find. If anyone can shed light on possible years manufactured, that would be great. I'm also wishing to learn if these knives came with all black on the jigged (look) portion of the handles, and the paint just wore off the high spots, or if the stamped jigging was the only portion that was blackened.

I'm sure it was originally equipped with a chain and button loop, but that is a different project for a different time. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy carrying this one around in my pocket for an unspecified period of time. It walks & it talks like a folding knife should.

Stay sharp! and Be safe!
