The 15

I have been a fan of the "small" khukris for a long time. Small being a very relative term here :)
Just as it's better to have a .22 pistol on your belt, than a .44 Magnum back in the truck when needed - a dainty khukri like that is more likely to be at hand than the more ideal chopper that gets left behind.

I have to concede this is true. It should be said better than 'concede'. There have been times, (for one reason or another, and there are many reasons) I've grabbed for a smaller khuk and it is exactly the right choice. Further, not only does it offer great utility and defense, but it does so in OUTSTANDING fashion. Credit where credit is due. It's time I reevaluated my small khuk negative bias. If trouble comes, and you've got one of HI's 'smaller' khuks, you have in your hands a tool that's way beyond normal specs for this. How many self defense knives, fighter knives, bayonet knives can dig through doors, pop locks, smash another's blade?

Thanks, munk. It must be the flu meds speaking...
Hey, get better soon:D We can't deal with much more concession around here.

You got that right- these flu meds do a number on your head. Being real sick does a tap dance on your soul.

But the little guys deserve an attaboy. I've carried the Yangdu Special out of doors many times and felt, well; Special. There's a 12" Sirupate in the door of the truck. The little guys get around.

Yeah and the relapse where you're not quite as sick as you were the first time but still feel pretty rough.:o :(

At least you have a dog.
I had a fever and was just falling asleep when something brought me out of it. Two inches from my face a little guy was smiling, everything was OK, he had Dad on Tap, and, "I want a new juice cup, this one's rotten."

Hey. To tell the real truth, I don't know how our Mothers did it. Nursing a high fever from a child at all hours of the night, setting the meals, cleaning up any mess, and always concerned about your health I'm a pretty good stay at home Dad, but I believe God gave Women something special inside to look out for everyone.

And dogs are good.

Amen. I really think that's true. I can play the role for a weekend and do a pretty darn good job. But then I'm wiped out. My wife seems to have an almost endless store of caring/nuturing energy. I hit the wall and then I just can't listen to one more minute of sibling battling--so I run up here to seek solace in cyberspace;)

Whoops! edited to add some khuk content: I really like the 15" khuks for light work. I love them for wearing on my belt when I have fires in the firepit--it seems like there's always some smaller chopping/whittling etc. that they excell at. However, I have pushed them into heavier work with good success. For firewood splitting they are out of their league IMO. But I don't reach for the axe or maul unless absolutely forced to--the 20"AK comes hulking out of the office with an evil grin at times like that.

The last real hike I went on was with the two older boys. I think I wrote it up at the time. I can't recall now if I took my excellent BAS, (practically given to me by my friend Hollow) or a blade such as the Yangdu Special. No matter;

The point being that the 15"s carry very well and are competant tools
for defense and emergency wood craft.

Both Raghorn and myself have heavy WWll's of about 16 inches in length.
Out of great friendship he gave me a special one of his own; a 16 9/16" khuk, horn handled with white metal fittings weighing 30 ounces. I've a 18" WWll weighing 28 ounces it might be fun to test side by side with the little brother. The wee child is asleep right now so I'll wait until he's up.

Best wishes to you. Get better fast!

Many thanks Steve. It's getting better but our kids are telling us that whatever it is going around lasts from 3 weeks to a month.:( :o

I'm just not real fond of the 15" models no matter which ones they may be.
To me the 15 incher's are at an in-between stage.
If I'm going hiking I'd rather carry a 17"-18" knife with a little extra weight than a 15" knife with less ability.
I've gotten special permission to cut certain things in our City Parks before and almost always carried a 13" Balance Model so as to not scare the sheeple.
To me it's about nearly as good as a 15" model even though it may take a tad bit longer it's not *that* much longer.
A 17"-18" khukuri would make short work of the task and to me are worth the extra weight, always has been, always will be.;)

Yvsa?

Try that "Airborne" stuff. Go to Walgreen's and buy the generic version, it works just as well and it's half the price of the real deal. Follow the directions. One tab every three hours and it tastes like crap, but seven tabs recently allowed me to dodge a bullet that layed my room mates low. Keep an eye on the sodium. Sodium bicarbonate is one of the ingrediants and it adds up quickly.

Forget my earlier ramblings on avoiding colds. This one's a keeper. One day itchy throat, one day runny nose, and I'm now good to go. I caught it from one of my room mates and still recovered before he did, and the symptoms were nowhere near as severe.

And to get on topic: I'm a 15" guy. Easy to pack, and enough khukuri for anything that absolutely needs to be cut. If 15" won't do the job, there's probably another way to make it happen.

Dave,

We don't have the stick poking little smiley or I'd use it, but just an observation that I have yet to see any pictures posted of actual cutting work by any of the people arguing bigger is better.
