The .22 as the true survival caliber?

Recently I have been thinking about buying a .45 or .44 magnum level action marlin, but with ammo prices the way they are it seems like my money would be better spent on a .22 and getting really good with it. I think I'll take a trip down to the gun store this week and give a look.

I recently sold my .44 lever action because .44 magnum is now like $40 for 50 rounds. I might look into a .357/.38 lever action so I can shoot .38 special.

Picked up another 1050 rounds today. 500 CCI Mini-mag HP's and 550 Federal Value Pack. Paid $35 out the door for the Mini-Mags and $12 at Wally World for the Fed's.

As far as price goes, reloading may become an essential skill.

As far as weapons and ammo bans go, we may actually get to the point where we have to use our guns as our forefathers designed to enforce the second amendment in order to maintain a free state. It's the eventuality they hoped wouldn't happen, but our founding fathers would not recognize the USA today as the system and country they conceived and founded. I can only pray we can fight these unconstitutional acts peacefully, within the system. Anything else is a last-resort, and it would suck to have to be in that position.

I'm pretty moderate, and love my country. I'm not militant or advocating treasonous acts. I'm saying it may get to the point where we have to fight against the treasonous acts perpetrated by those who would manipulate the system for their own power-hungry and greedy ends. Politicians today don't serve anyone but themselves.

Brian, truer words were only spoken by fellow Patriots, and your post is what was in my mind the whole time I was reading this thread:thumbup:. Man, do I have a friend in CT for you to meet......actually 2, but one is in the NW corner and the other is in the SE corner....go figure:rolleyes:

You guy's are thinking on too small of a scale when you think its a government conspiracy to raise the price of ammo and therefore take your guns away. The reason your ammo has risen in price is because the price of lead (as well as every other metal) has gone through the roof.

We are feeding the offshore industrial machine (china etc.) with all our resources so they can make the products we used to make, only much cheaper. We are exporting our resources and jobs to Asia which is becoming better and better at providing us with products we could make only cheaper.

Its impossible to compete with an economy where they can pay their workers 10 dollars a week. When will North America wake up and shut down the importation of finished products and the exportation of our raw materials to and from Asia? Mexico is a close second in the battle against our economies. The auto makers (and the rest of the manufacturing sector) here are all laying off and closing, but all the while they are opening plants in Mexico to make the cars and other products we buy.

In the not too distant future we will all be miners, digging ore for the mighty industrial machine or shipping companies hauling the ore overseas.

Just some food for thought.

(gets off soap box now)

I am all about the Ruger MK II and 10/22. As a matter of fact a buddy and I plan on building 10/22 tac drivers this summer. Something zen about trying to put 10 rounds through the same hole.

My kids are nuts over shooting the MK II. If teaching your kids to shoot is not survival what is?

I have to agree on the price of ammo. The 22 is the best for teaching basic marksmanship. The MK II goes into my actual BOB with several mags. Very little you can not do with a well places 22 round.

I agree about a .22 being the best overall round for "survival" puposes but I am stunned that you guys aren't reloading!!! Even if you don't reload now, buy primers, bullets, and powder. Save your brass! The time may come where reloading will be the only way you can keep shooting.

Why doesnt anyone use air rifles for plinking? The ammo is cheap and you can even shoot in the backyard. I can pop at tin cans for hours on end and never seem to get tired.

I don't know about "best" round
But I can rip shit up with my Ruger 10/22
I don't need no stinkin' scope either
Especially with the Butler Creek 30 rd banana clips

I read this book called Vengeance by George Jonas
In it the Israeli hit squad ONLY used Beretta .22's
In bursts of 2
They were brainwashed to think Pff!! pFF!! in their sleep

Ideally I would much prefer a .223 rifle and maybe a .45 or .40 S&W pistol as the ultimate survival firearm setup
Are we talking about survival like Red Dawn? or Jericho?
Or like picking berries and shooting rabbits/bushcraft type stuff??

But yeah
.22 would do if need be

I too have stopped going to the range because of gun ammo prices
I guess one if these days I will HAVE to get into reloading

The 22LR is a very good choice for foraging. Centerfire for social disorder. There is no conspiracy. Most things are pretty transparent in the US. Bullet coding, that is one for the conspiracy folks. It would be very successful in one thing... making ammunition more expensive and hence reducing the amount of ammunition in circulation if people abided by the law.

Technition I agree with your post too. 3Wolves I shoot Beeman air rifles and they're no toys! great varmint rifles and fun for target shooting in your yard without annoying the neighbors! Very good practice for learning breath control too IME. Kids should grow up learning the proper firearm handling techiniques to become proficient outdoorsman.

i love .22's.. though it's been quite a while since i shot one... i pretty much just stick to shooting my longbows...
i am a pretty good shot with a .22 also.... i need to go and pick mine up from my dad's house...:o

Well said, Brian.

Just to throw something out there to you guys....if you're a decent shot with a pistol, a bull barrel Ruger Mk II (semi-auto in .22 rimfire) comes in handy for squirrels and rabbits. A lot more convenient than a rifle.

Thanks for that heads up Troop, still looking for a nice 22 cal pistol. Can't decide between rim or centerfire?

I usually don't post in this forum, but I have to chime in on .22's -- esp the rugers. I learned to shoot on a ruger bearcat and old ruger mk1 -- both of which my dad used to carry on swamp buggies in the everglades in the 1960s.
I still have the MK1 -- most of the bluing is gone and it wears a wooden set of grips my dad made. It is also still a tackdriver.

My current favorite paper puncher is a slabsided MK2 govt model with a set of randall fung grips. I bring a lot of pistols to the range, but that one seems to win the day every time for fun and range time.
